Air strikes on Syria will heighten anti-West sentiment: Morocco

Syrians wave the national flag and portraits of President Bashar al Assad in Damascus on Saturday

Appearing on Fox News Sunday, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said in a military context the president's declaration of "mission accomplished" refers only to the "task now in front of you" and the United States will continue to monitor Assad's use of chemical weapons and are prepared to respond with further action in the form of additional military action.

New Western air strikes in Syria would provoke "chaos" in global relations, Russian President Vladimir Putin told his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Rouhani, on Sunday.

On Monday, the French ambassador said priority must be given to boosting the work of the world's chemical arms watchdog so it can dismantle Syria's "secret" toxic weapons programme.

"We warned that such actions will not be left without consequences", he said.

The U.S. said no special United Nations permission was required.

Inspectors from the global chemical weapons watchdog have been unable to access sites controlled by Russian Federation and the Syrian regime in the town of Douma to investigate an attack on 7 April that killed dozens and prompted US-led missile strikes on Friday night.

The chemical attack which has so far been denied by the Russian-backed Bashar al-Assad regime has sparked worldwide condemnation and calls for military intervention.

Both Russia and the Syrian government have welcomed the visit.

The group's director-general, Ahmet Uzumcu, said Syrian and Russian officials cited "pending security issues" in keeping its inspectors from reaching Douma.

"The Syrian raid was so perfectly carried out, with such precision, that the only way the Fake News Media could demean it was by my use of the term 'Mission Accomplished.' I knew they would seize on this but felt it is such a great Military term, it should be brought back".

Russian officials last week claimed British intelligence agencies had helped stage the suspected chemical attack in Douma.

European Union foreign ministers will discuss the air strikes in Luxembourg on Monday, amid concerns by some member states about the legality of the operation without United Nations approval, and about the categorical attribution of responsibility to Syria ahead of reports from the inspectors on the ground.

The OPCW itself had declared that the Syrian government's chemical weapons stockpile had been removed in 2014, only to confirm later that sarin was used in a 2017 attack in the northern town of Khan Sheikhun.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Sunday that the sanctions are being imposed "without any link to any realities".

Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron and U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May released statements after the attack had begun, saying the missile strikes were focused on chemical weapons sites.

With Russian involvement in Syria and Moscow condemning Saturday's allied missile strike, Haley acknowledged that U.S. In contrast, a year after Mr. Trump responded to an apparent chemical weapons attack with a missile attack, apparently Syria did it again.

But she will be questioned over why she broke with a convention to seek parliamentary approval for the action, a decision that she and her ministers say was driven by the need to act quickly.

The British government also published its legal position on the airstrikes after Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called the military action "legally questionable".

In an indication that the West, too, would prefer to lower tensions, the United States and Britain both reiterated that their military action on Saturday was not aimed at Assad, Putin's ally, only at his use of chemical weapons.
