Weekend Box Office: Between The Rock And 'A Quiet Place'

John Krasinski

Great word of mouth has pushed New Line's "Rampage" from a slow start to close to its pre-weekend projection goal, as the Dwayne Johnson-led smash-up is set to debut with $34.5 million from 4,101 screens.

It's been slated by critics and holds only a 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with Variety saying: The movie isn't scary, it isn't gripping, it isn't fun, and it isn't fueled by any sort of clever compulsion. One of the film's tensest scenes comes early on, when the family of four led by John Krasinski and Emily Blunt's characters are playing Monopoly and a lantern gets knocked over.

New Line Cinema and Warner Bros.' science fiction monster film "Rampage" topped North American box office in its opening weekend with an estimated 34.5 million US dollars, defeating "A Quiet Place" in a close race.

The bombardment was joined by Britain and France, which launched fighter jets to strike suspected chemical facilities in Homs and Damascus.

Fourth place went to Warner Bros.' science fiction film "Ready Player One", which earned an estimated 11.2 million dollars in its third weekend, pushing its North American cume to 114.6 million through Sunday. But again, with a massive budget like that, Rampage needs a good showing overseas to make a profit, and it's doing just that, eyeing a $50 million opening in China in addition to performing well in other overseas markets. That figure brings the movie's domestic total to about $100 million after 10 days in theaters.

Universal and Blumhouse's supernatural horror film "Truth or Dare" opened in third place with an estimated 19.08 million dollars. The film has been received poorly with a B- CinemaScore grade and a 15 percent RT score. Universal's R-rated comedy Blockers rounded out the top five with $10.3 million for a tepid 10-day domestic cume of $36.9 million.
