The US and its allies France and Britain launched air strikes, targeting sites associated with Syria's chemical weapons capabilities.

Mr Trump's position appeared at odds with Defence Secretary James Mattis who described the attack as a "one-time shot" amid reported differences between the two men in previous days over the extent of the response against Syria.

The U.S., Britain and France said they launched Saturday's strike to punish Syrian President Bashar Assad for an alleged chemical attack against civilians in the town of Douma outside Damascus.

President Donald Trump has warned Syria's government the United States is "locked and loaded" to strike again if it carries out new chemical attacks.

"However Syria has forced us to take action by it use of chemical weapons", she said, adding: "The U.S. is locked and loaded". Syrian state media called the attack a "flagrant violation of worldwide law".

The Secretary-General also said that worldwide investigators are ready to visit the site of the suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria's Douma where several militias and armies are fighting proxy wars.

Haley said the United States successfully hit the heart of Syria's chemical weapons enterprise, and because of these actions, it is confident that it has crippled Syria's chemical weapons programme.

He said France has "no doubt" that the Syrian government was behind a suspected chemical attacks last weekend.

"When our President draws a red line, our President enforces the red", she said.

China, one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, said unilateral military action bypassing the council would "add new complicating factors to the resolution of the Syrian issue".

Trudeau has previously ruled out any Canadian participation in military action.

French President Emmanuel Macron said the strikes had been limited so far to Syria's chemical weapons facilities.

And the strikes certainly didn't even come close to making Assad fear that anything of real value to him or the regime would be threatened if he used chemical weapons again. And, Hill believes this missile attack adds to the mess which includes strained relations with Russian Federation as it backs al-Assad.

The Pentagon assessed that nerve agents were present in the Barzah research center and that the Syrian regime employed about 40 surface-to-air missiles, but those launches occurred after the last impact of the United States and its allies' strike.
