Russian Federation accuses USA of putting worldwide peace at risk

Russia warns US against military action over alleged chemical attack in Syria

This was playing with fire after Russia - Syria's strongest ally - had warned that a missile attack would be met with force by Moscow, raising fears of a straight fight between the USA and Russia.

With punitive USA military action seemingly imminent, Russian Federation scrambled to deflect blame from its ally Bashar al-Assad and, according to a monitor group, Syrian forces evacuated key defense buildings in Damascus.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia will call for an emergency meeting of the United Nations' Security Council following the coordinated missile strikes by the U.S., France and the U.K. against Syria.

"To make matters worse, it is Russian Federation alone that had agreed to be the guarantor of the removal of all chemical weapons from Syria", Haley said.

The U.S. State Department said the United States has proof at "a very high level of confidence" that the Syrian government carried out the attack but is still working to identify the mix of chemicals used. Both European allies have pledged a "joint response" to the alleged chemical attack. Moscow on Friday accused Britain of helping to stage the Douma incident to stoke anti-Russian hysteria.

French President Emmanuel Macron declared that France has proof that Syria used chemical weapons against its own people in Douma on April 7.

He said there was a heightened "danger of escalation" because of the Russian military presence in Syria. An initial team of inspectors had only arrived in Syria on Friday. They had been expected to start their investigation into the alleged Douma attack on Saturday.

Russian Federation has called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, and is considering supplying new S-300 missile systems to its ally Syria - which it recently declined to do so, under pressure from the West.

Later Wednesday morning, Mr. Trump tweeted that Washington's relationship with Moscow is "worse now than it has ever been".

Alexander Sherin, deputy head of the State Duma's defense committee, said Trump "can be called Adolf Hitler No. 2 of our time - because, you see, he even chose the time that Hitler attacked the Soviet Union".

Trump - who previously warned that there would be a "big price to pay" for backing Assad - called on Russia Friday to "decide if it will continue down this dark path or if it will join with civilized nations as a force for stability and peace".

Damascus condemned what it called the "brutal, barbaric aggression" by the U.S. and its allies, adding that the strikes would hinder the OPCW probe into the alleged gas attack in Douma that prompted Saturday's attack.

US, Russia Clash at UNSC over Probing Chemical Weapons Attacks in Syria
That panel had found that the Syrian air force had dropped sarin on the village of Khan Sheikhun in April of a year ago . Meanwhile, global chemical weapons experts are expected to go to Douma to investigate a suspected poison gas attack.

The US, France and the United Kingdom have reportedly backed the former's plan of striking Syria, in response to the alleged chemical attack.

Haley also took aim at Russia's claim that the United Kingdom helped fake the attacks in order to garner support for the USA -led strike.

Some national leaders appeared anxious to avert a showdown between the USA and Russian Federation.

" We hope that there will be no point of return - that the USA and their allies will refrain from military action against a sovereign state", Nebenzia informed press reporters late Thursday evening hours.

Asked if he meant war between the United States and Russian Federation, he said: "We can not exclude any possibilities unfortunately".

Assad, who is supported by Iranian-back fighters as well as the Russian air force, has cemented his control over most of the western, more heavily populated, part of the country. Post-strike statements from Western capitals suggest they want to lower the tension.

Russian ships had left the Tartus naval base in Syria, Interfax news agency quoted a Russian lawmaker as saying.

In the opening speech, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged all states on Saturday "to show restraint in these risky circumstances and to avoid any acts that could escalate matters and worsen the suffering of the Syrian people".

The participation of British and French forces enables Trump to assert a wider global commitment against the use of chemical weapons, but the multi-pronged attack carries the risk of Russian retaliation.

Col. Gen. Sergei Rudskoi of the Russian military's General Staff said the strikes have not caused any casualties and Syrian military facilities targeted by the U.S., Britain and France have suffered only minor damage.

He added: "We will need to take decisions in due course, when we judge it most useful and effective".
