Pravin Togadia quits as President after three decades

Pravin Togadia was with VHP for over three decades

Giving the details of his proposed indefinite hunger strike, Togadia said that it is meant for Hindus' welfare, construction of Ram Temple, ban on cow slaughter, Common Civil Code and Kashmiri Hindus.

Former Himachal Pradesh Governor V S Kokje was Saturday elected the VHP's global president, ending decades-long reins of firebrand leader Pravin Togadia whose nominee and incumbent Raghava Reddy faced a huge drubbing in the first election in 52 years.

In December 2011, Togadia replaced Singhal as the worldwide working president of VHP.

Togadia had informally been the leader of the VHP since 2003 and was formally appointed to the post in 2011. Kokje got 131 of 192 votes polled in the election despite Togadia throwing his weight behind Reddy. "Hindus first is the mission of my life and from Tuesday, I will go on an indefinite fast in Ahmedabad for fulfilling the longstanding demands of Hindus".

Togadia, who batted for Mr Reddy, however, alleged irregularities in the exercise.

"This blatant anti-Narendra Modi and anti-BJP stance is not the style of the sangh now".

Togadia had made a sensational statement last month, claiming that a Rajasthan police team had come here to abduct him and he feared he could be eliminated in a staged encounter.

All this did not sit well with the RSS.

"Finally and inevitably, the balance went in favour of Prime Minister Modi and it was decided that an attempt to recapture the VHP would be attempted", said a senior source.
