Gov. Bevin: "I apologize" to those hurt by comments

Gov. Bevin indirectly addresses sexual assault comments in video message

The budget included increased spending for public education with the help of an accompanying tax increase.

"Clearly a tremendous amount of people did not fully appreciate what it was that I was communicating and I hurt a lot of people - that's my responsibility and I apologize for those who had been hurt by the things that were said was not my intent whatsoever".

"Sometimes the words that people say, the way in which they say it, or just the misunderstanding that comes from that can also have unintended consequences and I think that is what happened from the very things I said", Bevin said in the video.

Following widespread outrage over those remarks, Bevin has issued an apology, stating it wasn't his intent to hurt anyone.

Bevin had come under scrutiny after he told a reporter children left at home could be susceptible to sexual assault or even be poisoned.

Some educators on social media said they would wear black on Monday as a show of solidarity against what they viewed as Gov. Matt Bevin's negative comments about teachers.

Now, politicians from both sides of the aisle have spoken out about Bevin's comments, and the Kentucky House officially gave him a condemnation.

At least 44 school districts closed Friday as teachers marched on the state capitol in call on legislators to override the governor's veto of the state's budget and tax plan.

"It's entirely inappropriate and perverse that the man sitting in the governorship would criticize Kentuckians who stood up today for teachers, public employees and our public education by insinuating that their presence in Frankfort today caused a child to be sexually assaulted", Kentucky Democratic Executive Director Mary Nishimuta said.

"And so the extent that I try this effectively, nice".

Bevin said in the video that many misunderstood his words. Cooper voted for Bevin in 2015 and vowed Saturday to not do it once more.

Robin Cooper, an occupational therapist in Fayette County, the state's second-largest public school district, was among the thousands of educators protesting at the Capitol in recent weeks.

On Friday, Senate President Robert Stivers said he would hate it if Bevin's comments "marred" his accomplishments. "If anyone asks me for my advice, I would say that they should come out and make a statement, either clarifying it or being apologetic and getting the statement behind them".

"The teachers and public employees he has insulted over the past year deserve much more than this".
