Former First Lady of United States Barbara Bush is in "failing health"

Former first lady Barbara Bush has endured a series of hospitalizations and has chose to halt treatment for her failing health, according to a statement from her family Sunday.

Bush, the wife of one US president and the mother of another USA president, has struggled with health issues due to COPD for several months.

Barbara Bush, the wife of former president President George H.W. Bush and mother of former President George W. Bush will no longer seek medical treatment after several hospitalizations, according to a spokesperson for the family. "Focusing on the family is the best place to start to make this country more literate, and I still feel that being more literate will help us solve so numerous other problems facing our society", she wrote in her 1994 memoir.

Bush, 92, is battling Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and congestive heart failure and has been hospitalized several times over the previous year. In years past she has been hospitalized for Graves' disease, a thyroid condition, and bronchitis, a respiratory ailment.

Barbara Bush has been married to her husband for 73 years.

Her husband, 94, also has had health issues in recent years. Her father was the publisher of McCall's and Redbook magazines.

Eight years after she and her husband left the White House, she stood with her husband as their son George W. was sworn in as president.

The couple met at a Christmas dance in 1941, when Barbara Pierce was 16 and George Bush was 17.
