Paper license plates get security redesign amid fraud increase

The city authorities say the move will make life easier for drivers despite the privacy issues

Its report added that the digital plate is that it will flash "stolen" if someone will try to carjack the vehicle or steal the digital plate.

The head of Dubai's Vehicle Licensing Department said the plates will alert police and ambulances if a auto is in an accident, and allows driver-to-driver communication about hazards in the road or other traffic conditions.

Dubai is set to launch digital number plates as part of a trial that will also see cars fitted with Global Positioning System and transmitters.

Fines, parking fees and registration costs can be automatically billed via the smart plate and its associated electronic wallet. Though the functions of the license plate definitely promise to increase convenience and safety for drivers, it could also make users more prone to personal data breaches, since the technology would require access to some of the owner's personal information. Besides being able to contact the police and ambulance services after an accident, the new plate allows real-time communication with other drivers about traffic conditions or any accidents ahead.

Known as Tag2Connect (T2C), the system will be capable of automatically alerting emergency services if the vehicle is involved in an accident or stolen.

The US and France say they have proof it took place and, alongside the United Kingdom , are considering military retaliation. The White House says it is continuing to assess intelligence and talk to its allies about how to respond.

'The digital plate will also allow vehicles to connect with each other.

The tests will start in May with a proposed end date of November. If every vehicle is fitted with the plates, then the location of every person connected to the government is basically known by the authorities at all times.

Testing will begin next month, so expect to see a couple of digital plates rolling around Dubai. Dubai officials also plan for self-driving cars to make up 25 percent of all trips in the city by 2030.

The city is also planning high-speed Hyperloop pods to open by 2020 that would transport passengers to the UAE's capital Abu Dhabi in just 12 minutes, a distance of over 120km.
