Caster Semenya clocks new Games record in 1500m triumph

Semenya celebrates as she crosses the finish line almost three seconds ahead of her opponents in the Carrara Stadium Gold Coast in the 1500m final

The 27-year-old's victory by more than two seconds sliced 1.1 sec off Budd's 1984 South African record and earned Semenya her first Commonwealth medal, to go with her swathe of Olympic and world titles over 800m. "We are a great nation and we want to display that to the world", she said.

South Africa were banned at the time because of its Apartheid policies and it was Budd's potential participation for England that led to the African countries boycotting the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh.

Semenya set and broke the standing record in 4:00.71.

Her time today was particularly impressive considering she was content to sit in the pack and not push until the final stages.

Chepkoech held on for silver with Hall charging, but the Australian went off gas in the final 30m as Melisa Courtney of Wales pipped her for bronze.

He carried-on around the bend to celebrate with the national flag - and deliver some customary celebratory press-ups - as his rivals slumped on the track showing noticeably more fatigue.

There was a national record in fourth for India's Anas Muhammed Yahya in 45.31.

"Disappointment is disappointment (in) 2017, now we are focused again on the 2018, so we forgot about what happened in 2017", said Makwala, whose path to gold was smoothed by the absence of South Africa's Olympic champion Wayde van Niekerk.

Jamaica made it a one-two through Hansle Parchment, who ran 13.22, while Australia's Nicholas Hough won bronze in a PB of 13.38.

There was another nation 1-2 in the women's T54 1500m and this time it was for Australia, much to the crowd's delight.

The order was not determined until the very final jump, however, as Kimberly Williams produced a PB of 14.64 to leapfrog team-mate Shanieka Ricketts, who had led with 14.52. After seven events, he was leading with 6,297 points.

Chepkoech wiped off the tears of two consecutive fourth place finishes at the Olympics in 2016 and the World Championship previous year to win her first major championship medal.

The middle-distance star was never in trouble on a track that had been dampened by rain on Australia's Gold Coast and she powered to the line to grab a slice of history.

Another dramatic finish came in the men's T54 1,500m wheelchair final when Alexandre Dupont of Canada won in 3:11.75.

Wales' Melissa Courtney gave everything to clinch bronze in the women's 1500m final on the third evening of athletics action at the Commonwealth Games.

Tandy was well of the pace of victor Ben Proud, touching the wall 0.46 behind the Englishman in 21.81, but he held off Australian bronze medallist Cameron McEvoy who clocked 21.92.
