Dem senator: GOP should tell Trump obstructing Mueller probe is 'unacceptable'

Graham Trump firing Mueller would be'the beginning of the end of his presidency

"A great day for Democracy", Mr Trump tweeted afterwards.

President Donald Trump on Sunday took out his frustrations over the intensifying Russian Federation investigation by lashing out at special counsel Robert Mueller, signalling a possible shift away from a strategy of co-operating with a probe he believes is biased against him.

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R., S.C.) of the House Intelligence Committee said Sunday that President Donald Trump and his lawyers would be unwise to interfere with Robert Mueller's special counsel investigation.

"I think we owe it to the average American to have a hearing in the Judiciary Committee where Mr. Sessions, Attorney General Sessions, comes forward with whatever documentation he has about the firing, and give Mr. McCabe a chance to defend himself", Graham said.

Trump tweeted Sunday: "Why does the Mueller team have 13 hardened Democrats, some big Crooked Hillary supporters, and Zero Republicans?"

That sent former CIA Director John Brennan, an outspoken Trump critic, into a Twitter tizzy: "When the full extent of your venality, moral turpitude, and political corruption becomes known, you will take your rightful place as a disgraced demagogue in the dustbin of history". "Does anyone think this is fair?" "And yet, there is NO COLLUSION!"

Graham, a co-author of legislation that would make it harder for a president to fire a special counsel, said it was very important that Mueller be allowed to proceed without interference and that many Republicans share this view.

Coupled with past reports that Trump has indeed mused about igniting the process to fire Mueller, Senate Republicans expressed little concern - even as the president embarked on a slew of firings across his administration.

Sen. Richard Durbin of IL, the chambers second-ranking Democrat, said he is concerned about “a constitutional crisis in this country.”. "Members of Congress need to be vocal in support of Special Counsel Mueller finishing his investigation", said Sen. But that seemed like a change in strategy because up until now, the president's lawyers have said they were cooperating with Mueller.

Trump lashed out at Mueller by name and questioned the biases of Mueller's investigation team in a series of tweets over the weekend. The weekend got off to a fast start at 10 pm on Friday night, when Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller and presumably would have the power to remove him. John Dowd, a Trump lawyer, told me: "I am told that the P never made that statement according to two others who were present".

KELLY: I should point out McCabe was not summarily fired.

McCabe was sacked Friday by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Trump also drew criticism from fellow Republicans on Sunday over the firing of McCabe, who said he believed he was targeted because he corroborated Comey's claims that Trump tried to pressure Comey into killing the Russian Federation probe.

"It is part of this administration's ongoing war on the FBI and the efforts of the special counsel investigation, which continue to this day", he added. "Their persistence in this campaign only highlights the importance of the Special Counsel's work". They also recount different conversations he had with Comey, who kept notes on meetings with Trump.

Comey's book, A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership, is set to be published in mid-April.

The firing set off dueling tweets between Trump, who called the termination a "great day for the hard working men and women of the Federal Bureau of Investigation", and Comey, the director he fired 10 months ago.

Trump has repeatedly accused McCabe and Comey of having protected Clinton from prosecution, including over her misuse of a private email server while she was secretary of state. "I don't believe he made memos except to help his own agenda, probably at a later date", Trump tweeted. For one of them to now call for that is quite disturbing.

In another tweet, Trump cited reports that McCabe said his interactions with the media were approved by superiors, but Comey testified to Congress that there were no news leaks during the Clinton investigation. He said strongly "never, no".

Trump claimed Comey lied in that interaction. He has not released any statements on all the furor surrounding the investigation.
