Russians cast ballots in 2018 Presidential Election

Russia votes but outcome is clear: 6 more years of Putin

Putin, who has extended his power until at least 2024 and is already Russia's longest-serving leader since Stalin.

According to central election commission data with 99.8 percent of ballots counted, Putin took 76.67 percent of the vote, well ahead of his nearest competitor Communist Party candidate Pavel Grudinin, who was on 11.79 percent.

The turnout at the election was 67.47 per cent, the CEC reported.

The Russian strongman ran against seven other candidates, but his most vocal critic Alexei Navalny was barred from the ballot for legal reasons and the final outcome was never in doubt.

Vladimir Putin rolled to a crushing re-election victory Sunday for six more years as Russia's president, and he told cheering supporters in a triumphant but brief speech that "we are bound for success".

The exit poll by state-owned pollster VTsIOM at 1,200 voting stations around Russian Federation projected that Putin had won 73.9 percent of the vote, up from 64 percent six years ago.

"I therefore ask you to come to the polling stations on Sunday, use your right to choose a future for the great Russian Federation that we love".

The Central Election Commission said on Monday morning that it had not registered any serious complaints of violations.

Selfie competitions, giveaways, food festivals and children's entertainers were laid on at polling stations in a bid to entice voters.

But employees of state and private companies and students reported coming under pressure to vote.

Sunday also marks exactly four years since Putin signed a treaty declaring Crimea part of Russian Federation following its annexation from Ukraine, an action that led to the war in the east of the former Soviet state.

Ultra-nationalist firebrand Vladimir Zhirinovsky took around 5.66 percent, former reality TV presenter Ksenia Sobchak was on 1.67 percent, while veteran liberal politician Grigory Yavlinsky received just over one percent of the vote.

"In any country, especially democratic ones, elections are a celebration when people come to cast their vote". Navalny has called for boycotting the vote.

Since taking power 18 years ago, Putin has stamped his total authority on the country, silencing opposition and reasserting Moscow's lost might overseas.

Do you think that I will stay here until I'm 100 years old?

Russian President Vladimir Putin met Thursday with young scientists and entrepreneurs, promising to encourage new talent three days before the presidential vote he is certain to win.

Despite criticisms of the Kremlin's actions ahead of the election, Putin is a genuinely popular figure in Russian Federation, and confrontation with the West has boosted his approval ratings, past polling shows.

"Of course I'm for Putin, he's a leader", said Olga Matyunina, a 65-year-old retired economist.

"After he brought Crimea back, he became a hero to me".

Sunday marks exactly four years since Putin signed a treaty declaring Crimea to be a part of Russian Federation after its annexation from Ukraine in a move that triggered the outbreak of a pro-Kremlin insurgency in the east of the ex-Soviet country.

In the run up to the vote, a new crisis broke out with the West as Britain implicated Putin in the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal with a Soviet-designed nerve agent. The Obama administration expelled diplomats and seized Russian compounds to punish Russia for election meddling.

Russian cyberattacks created to influence the 2016 USA presidential election were far more cost-effective.

In a meeting with the losing candidates, Putin said Monday that Russian Federation would strengthen its defense posture, but emphasized the country would not start another arms race. "I hope and wish that we will be able to counteract the estrangement on our continent, and between the people of Russian Federation and Germany, and that you will use your new term of office for this goal".

The president has said he will use his fourth term to address a litany of domestic problems including widespread poverty and poor healthcare.

At home, Putin would face a challenge of how to diversify an economy still dependent on oil and gas and improve medical care and social services in regions far removed from the cosmopolitan glitter of Moscow.

The elections in Crimea are being monitored by 3,600 officially accredited Russian observers, as well as some worldwide ones from France, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Great Britain, Spain, Italy, Germany, Israel, Sweden, Ukraine and Cyprus.
