Parents Killed In Car Crash While Fleeing ICE Agents

Immigration agents make arrest in Berkeley

"As the officers departed the location of the attempted engagement, they came across the overturned vehicle and immediately called 911 for assistance".

A mother and father in Delano, California were killed in a auto crash early Tuesday morning while fleeing Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, Newsweek reports, after officers mistook the father for another Mexican citizen they planned to arrest. Neither the police department nor ICE would address whether the agents were in an unmarked vehicle.

The Delano Police Department said that the driver lost control of the SUV while speeding away, veered onto a dirt shoulder, and then rammed into a power pole.

The Garcias were originally from the southern Mexican state of Guerrero and mainly spoke Mixtec, an indigenous language.

The increased ICE action has instilled fear into undocumented immigrants, which was evident in the couple's reaction after realizing federal agents had pulled them over.

Arturo Rodriguez, the president of United Farm Workers (UFW), said the couple left their home Tuesday morning, searching for work.

It was not clear from Delano police reports whether the ICE agents who pulled over the SUV were in an unmarked vehicle.

ICE spokeswoman Lori K. Haley claimed that agents initially went to the couple's home because they thought it belonged to a Mexican citizen who had been "previously removed". Garcia, who matched their target's description, exited the house, got into his auto, and fled the area "at a high rate of speed", Haley said.

Garcia, however, was a citizen of Mexico who was voluntarily returned to Mexico three times between 2008 and 2017, and he was removed under the provisions of expedited removal in 2017, Haley said.

Marcelina Garcia had no prior encounters with immigration authorities, she added. Research shows that undocumented immigrants commit crimes at lower rates than US citizens, rendering ICE's claims that these individuals are threatening national security an unsatisfactory attempt to justify policies that unnecessarily instill fear in immigrants and can lead to tragic deaths. His administration has said it targets people with criminal records, but many others are getting picked up.

The accident came just days after U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a federal lawsuit against California and attacked its elected officials for sanctuary city laws in the state that reportedly limit local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration agents, CNN reported.

California produces almost half the country's fruits, vegetables and nuts, valued at $47 billion annually and employs roughly 325,000 workers.
