Deputy never entered building during Parkland shooting, video shows

Broward County Sheriff's Office releases surveillance video outside Stoneman Douglas High School day of shooting

Surveillance video released Thursday showed the only armed sheriff's deputy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, remained outside during the February 14 massacre at the school, taking cover behind a wall.

Security video shows a Florida sheriff's deputy going toward the high school building while a gunman massacred 17 students and staff members, but he then backed away and stayed outside with his handgun drawn.

Phil Keating reported the details on "Outnumbered Overtime" Thursday.

Meanwhile, Sheriff Scott Israel criticized Peterson days after the shooting, claiming that the former deputy should have "went in, addressed the killer, killed the killer".

It begins shortly after gunfire erupted, with Peterson and civilian security monitor Kelvin Greenleaf walking with goal outside an administration building, clearly alarmed by sounds.

The Sheriff's Office said after receiving unpaid suspension, Peterson chose to resign and retired immediately to avoid possible termination.

WPTV and USA Today obtained the time-stamped video footage, which show Peterson and an unidentified adult male approach the door of the building where the shooting was taking place.

CCTV released by the Broward County Sherrif's Office shows Peterson and an unnarmed staff member rushing towards the building in a cart.

"Be advised we have possible, could be firecrackers, I think we have shots fired, possible shots fired", Peterson told dispatchers.

The statement added that the sheriff's office was unable to discuss more about the investigation because of Florida law. The video captured him hurrying across the campus as the massacre was unfolding and then - while, police said, the shooting continued - standing outside for several minutes without seeming to take cover.

President Donald Trump called Peterson a coward, but Peterson, through his attorney, said he wasn't sure where the gunfire was coming from and that he was "no coward".

"Three other deputies also arrived on the scene but did not enter, the sheriff's office said".

Scot Peterson, one of law enforcement's most shameful cowards.

Another batch of 911 calls have been released from the day of the Parkland high school shooting in Florida.

Israel said that after being suspended, Peterson opted to resign, filing his retirement paperwork that day.

The release of the video stemmed from a lawsuit filed by the Miami Herald, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel and other media outlets against BSO and the school district, seeking release of video clips so that the public can "be given the first-hand opportunity to review and evaluate the video and the actions of its government officials".

About 22 minutes into the video, police lights can be seen at the far corner of the building.

The sheriff's office released a brief statement along with the surveillance footage. Defense attorney Melisa McNeill emphasized to the judge that Cruz remains willing "at any time" to plead guilty "in exchange for a waiver of the death sentence" and instead spend the rest of his life behind bars.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office released the video Thursday showing Deputy Scot Peterson's actions during the February 14 shooting.

The 27 minutes of footage released today does not show inside the buildings, the gunman or the faces of any students.
