Palestinian PM escapes Gaza explosion

Palestinian PM unhurt after explosion in Gaza

However, Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah was unharmed Tuesday but his Palestinian Authority quickly accused Gaza militants of trying to kill him.

Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah on Tuesday escaped unhurt after an explosion targeted his convoy when it entered the Gaza Strip.

The Gaza-based terrorist group also condemned the attempt to harm the security of the Gaza Strip and thwart attempts to achieve Palestinian reconciliation.

Hamas called the attack an "ugly crime" and said it had launched an investigation.

Hamdallah was visiting Gaza in order to attend the inauguration of a wastewater treatment plant and meet officials, reports Efe news agency.

The visit came as reconciliation efforts between Hamas and Abbas's Fatah party falter.

Centrist and leftist parties had also polled strongly, according to the partial results, with more than 90 per cent of the votes counted.

In November, Hamas handed over control of Gaza's border crossings to the Palestinian Authority. "We will continue to work diligently to complete our government projects in the Gaza Strip", the PM declared.

Hamdallah's visit comes amid a time of crisis in Gaza, where the economy is devastated.

The Washington Post reported last Thursday that U.S. President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt said the White House will hold a conference this week to look into saving the situation in Gaza.

The plant in question was envisioned in 2007 after overburdened sewage reservoirs collapsed, killing five villagers. Hamas' takeover of Gaza from the Palestinian Authority in 2007 and the ensuing Israeli-Egyptian blockade, power shortages and conflicts delayed the opening of the project for four years.

The World Bank, European Union and other European governments have paid almost US$75 million (NZ$102 million) in funding.
