Convicted 'Accountant of Auschwitz' reported dead at 96

Accountant of Auschwitz reportedly dies in hospital

In 2015 he became one of the last people to be convicted over Nazi Germany's slaughter of millions during World War II.

Oskar Groening, the former Auschwitz guard convicted in his 90s for his role in the murder of 300,000 Hungarian Jews at the concentration camp, has died in Germany.

A former Nazi SS guard dubbed the "Bookkeeper of Auschwitz" has died aged 96 without ever having served his sentence for being an accessory to murder, German media said on Monday.

Groening passed away in hospital, and prison authorities are yet to receive a death certificate.

Groening was found guilty in July 2015 of being an accessory to the murders of 300,000 Jews at the camp and sentenced to four years in prison.

"The essential, nearly frightening, point about Oskar Groening is that he is one of the least exceptional human beings you are ever likely to meet", said author Laurence Rees, who interviewed Groening in 2005.

During his trial, Groening admitted that he was "morally complicit" in the crimes but denied that he was legally guilty.

He was accused of counting the cash found in the belongings of new arrivals at the camp and sending it to Nazi headquarters in Berlin.

Efraim Zuroff, the head Nazi hunter for the Simon Wiesenthal Center, said it was unfortunate that Groening's conviction didn't result in "at least symbolic justice" for the victims of Auschwitz.

Groening was pursued through the courts following a landmark case that allowed prosecution for aiding and abetting the Nazis. He, too, died before he could begin serving his five-year-sentence. Most recently, his lawyers made one final bid for clemency, a decision on which still was pending.

During the trial, Groening asked for forgiveness while acknowledging that only the courts could decide when it came to criminal guilt.
