U.S. and European arms sales to Middle East soar amid widespread conflict

Saudi Arabia increased arms imports by 225% in 5 years

Russian Federation was the second-largest exporter with about 20 percent global arms deliveries, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) reported on March 11 in its latest overview of global weapons transfers.

It said Tokyo turned to the United States for several types of advanced weapons between 2013 and 2017, including the first batches of a total of 42 combat aircraft.

A SIPRI report on trends in global arms transfers also reflects the changing geopolitics of South Asia, with sales of weapons to Pakistan by the United States dropping by a significant 76 per cent in the past five years. Much of American exports include military and transport aircraft.

The US, which is the world's greatest exporter, expanded its deals between those two periods by 25%.

The research group said Russian Federation exported weapons to 47 countries as well as to rebel forces in eastern Ukraine, where Moscow-backed separatists are fighting the central government in Kyiv.

Extending its lead as the world's biggest arms exporter, the USA accounted for 34% of total arms exports.

Saudi Arabia, the world's second-largest arms importer, saw a 225 per cent increase in arms imports in 2013-17 compared to 2008-12.

Shortly after that, she told MSNBC's Joy Reid: "I certainly expected him to come out with some racist remarks about me". Waters added: 'Con man Don is gonna keep it up. "I've been saying some things about him for a while".

Arms exports by Russian Federation decreased by over seven percent between 2008-12 and 2013-17, the report says. However, German weapon exports to the Middle East jumped by 109 percent.

United States exports in the period 2008-2012 equaled 30% of the world's total. India's arms imports from the United States saw a more than six-fold jump. Arms exports by Germany-the fourth largest exporter in 2013-17-fell by 14 per cent between 2008-12 and 2013-17.

"Based on deals signed during the Obama administration, USA arms deliveries in 2013-17 reached their highest level since the late 1990s", said Dr Aude Fleurant, the director of the Sipri's arms and military expenditure programme.

China was the fifth largest arms exporter in 2013-17.

Setting a new trend, China has emerged as the number one arms supplier to Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar, by supplying almost 70% of the arms used by the military in these three nations. Arms imports by Egypt grew by 215 per cent over the past ten years, making it now the third-largest importer in the world.

Despite its continuing tensions with India and ongoing internal conflicts, Pakistan's weapon imports decreased by 36% between 2008-12 and 2013-17.

The world's arms sales in 2013-2017 increased by 10% compared to 2008-2012. In fact, Indian arms imports have increased in the past five years, despite a continued push for indigenous production.
