INX Media case: Karti Chidmabaram sent to judicial custody for 12 days

After the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told Special Judge Sunil Rana that they did not require further custody of Karti Chidambaram, the court remanded him to judicial custody. Karti's father P Chidambaram was also present in the courtroom.

Various undertrials facing prosecution under the mentioned laws were lodged in Tihar Jail where Karti Chidambaram will be lodged during his period of judicial custody, hence there was fear over his security.

"Under the circumstances when there is sufficient material clearly implicating the accused in this serious economic offence, it is absolutely necessary that the accused be remanded to the judicial custody", the CBI counsel said.

News18 reported that Karti's counsel Dayan Krishan moved an application in a Delhi court seeking a separate jail cell, and stated that since P Chidambaram had taken charge as a home minister "just after 26/11 Mumbai attacks and had several accused under MCOCA prosecuted, there is an indisputable threat to his life at Tihar jail".

CBI then argued in opposition to the plea for separate cell on the ground of "threats", and said if at all they were threats, they would be for P Chidambaram and not for Karti.

The apprehension raised by the senior counsel for accused can not be ignored keeping in view the social status of accused and his family, more specifically, his father, who is a former union minister. However, the judge directed Tihar Jail authorities to provide and ensure proper safety and security to Karti during the judicial custody. Karti's counsel in petition said that "How can an investigative agency deny me my security".

Judge Rana also allowed Karti to carry his spectacles and medicines as per prescription, subject to the approval of Jail doctor.

Yesterday, the Delhi Court extended the CBI custody of Chidambaram, till March 12. He was first sent to the CBI custody, where he was being interrogated till now.

It also said his bail plea would be heard on March 15 as scheduled.

Karti was arrested on his return from the United Kingdom in connection with the FIR lodged on 15 May. It, however, later revised the figure to $1 million (about Rs 6.50 crore at the current exchange rate and Rs 4.50 crore in 2007).

Directorate of Enforcement had registered a money laundering case against Karti and others in May 2017 for his role in facilitating clearance from the FIPB for INX Media Ltd and its Directors Peter and Indrani Mukherjea, both of whom are accused in the murder of Sheena Bora.
