French fashion icon Hubert de Givenchy dies aged 91

French haute couture fashion designer, Hubert de Givenchy has died, confirmed Givenchy brand.

Last year, he opened his "Hubert de Givenchy" exhibition at the Museum of Lace and Fashion in Calais, where, according to WWD, he said: "Mine is one of the most attractive professions in fashion: making others happy with an idea".

Philippe Venet, his partner and former haute couture designer, announced his death, according to French newspaper Le Figaro. Venet verified that Givenchy died in his sleep on Saturday. "He will be greatly missed".

A towering man of elegance and impeccable manners, he forged close friendships with his famous clients, from Hollywood screen sirens of the likes of Liz Taylor and Lauren Bacall to women of state, including Jackie Kennedy and Princess Grace of Monaco.

"He revolutionized worldwide fashion with the timelessly stylish looks he created for Audrey Hepburn, his great friend and muse for over 40 years", the house of Givenchy said in a statement on Monday.

De Givenchy was born on February 21, 1927 to an an aristocratic family in the provincial city of Beauvais, AP reports, and founded his label in 1952. The designer was known for styling his muse and British actress Hepburn.

His fashion house's enduring popularity was clear on this year's Oscars red carpet, when stars, including Black Panther's Chadwick Boseman, wore custom Givenchy designs.

It was also the Givenchy look that former USA first lady Jacqueline Kennedy adopted for her White House years, sticking to a uniform of shifts dresses, pillbox hats and low-heeled pumps.

Givenchy ready-to-wear collection debuted in 1954, and de Givenchy went on to create the iconic "Balloon coat" and the "Baby Doll" dress in 1958.

In 1988, he sold his namesake brand to LVMH which owns Louis Vuitton but remained the lead designer until 1996.

Givenchy was part of the elite cadre of Paris-based designers, including Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent, who redefined fashion after World War II, and a favoured pupil of design legend Cristóbal Balenciaga Eizaguirre.
