Wakanda Winning: 'Black Panther Hits $1 Billion Worldwide Mark

Black Panther Chadwick Boseman Marvel

In the month since its release, "Black Panther" has broken records at the box office and barriers in the film industry.

Black Panther has just done what only four other Marvel Studios films have: passed $1 billion at the global box office. That film is set to open worldwide the week of April 27.

The Atlanta-produced motion picture is only the 33rd film to hit that mark, and the 16th Disney film to hit the milestone - the fifth movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, behind The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3 and Captain America: Civil War.

With $521 million domestically, Black Panther is already the No. 9 release of all time and this weekend will become the #2 superhero release of all time, passing The Dark Knight ($535M).

The movie has surpassed movies like The Force Awakens, which earned $42-million in 2016 and Spider-Man with only $45-million.

Considering how well Black Panther has performed, it seems inevitable that Marvel will revisit the technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda for a sequel flick.

"Black Panther" is expected to win the weekend with $40-41 million, among the best ever totals for a fourth weekend.

"BTW, 'Black Panther's" opening in China is looking like a weekend opening in the high-$60M to low-$70M range. The movie is now firmly in the top ten of highest grossing movies of all time, and that isn't just counting superhero movies.

Directed by Ryan Coogler, Black Panther stars Michael B. Jordan, Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Lupita Nyong'o, Angela Bassett, Daniel Kaluuya, Forest Whitaker, Winston Duke, Andy Serkis, and Martin Freeman.
