Trump says Oakland mayor being probed for immigration warning

Oakland Mayor

President Donald Trump speaks during a meeting with his Cabinet in the Cabinet Room at the White House, in Washington, March 8, 2018.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Wednesday morning in Sacramento, "Federal law is the supreme law of the land", a day after the federal government sued California over state laws that it alleges interfere with immigration enforcement.

"How dare you vilify members of our community by trying to frighten the American public into thinking that all undocumented residents are risky criminals", Schaaf said. "How dare you needlessly endanger the lives of our law enforcement officers to promote a radical open-borders agenda", he said.

He specifically called out Schaaf over her decision to leak news of the impending ICE raids, which critics say may have put ICE agents at risk of violence during the operation. "How dare you distort the reality about declining violent crime rates in a diverse, sanctuary city like Oakland to advance a racist agenda". "How dare you vilify members of our community", Schaaf said during a press conference following the attorney general's remarks. "That they know their rights as well as their responsibilities and know about the resources that this community offers", she said.

Former U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag, an Obama-era appointee, has agreed to help Schaaf and the City of Oakland pro bono, if any matters should arise from her ICE statements.

In addition to referencing one of the most famous battles of the Civil War, Sessions called on the state to "stop treating immigration agents differently from everybody else" for the goal of frustrating federal immigration enforcement and advancing a pro-immigrant, "open borders" policy that he described as radical and irrational.

Administration officials allege the laws, passed by the Legislature previous year and signed by Brown, blatantly obstruct federal immigration law and thus violate the Constitution's supremacy clause, which gives federal law precedence over state enactments. Another stops local governments from contracting with for-profit companies and ICE to hold immigrants.

"They are picking a fight with diverse sanctuary cities and the people who lead them, but I can not let that distract me from my job". Jerry Brown, who accused him of lying.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions came to Sacramento Wednesday to speak to law enforcement officials.

"But California, we have a problem", he said.

In his speech to more than 100 police chiefs, sheriffs and other law enforcement officers, Sessions argued that the Trump administration did not reject immigration, but said the USA should not reward those who unlawfully enter the country with benefits, such as legal status, food stamps and work permits. "They want the money, they should give up on the sanctuary cities".

In addition to referencing one of the most famous battles of the Civil War, Sessions called on the state to "stop treating immigration agents differently from everybody else" for the objective of frustrating federal immigration enforcement and advancing a pro-immigrant, "open borders" policy that he described as radical and irrational.

The California Peace Officers' Association and groups representing police chiefs, sheriffs, district attorneys, narcotics investigators and the California Highway Patrol have often been split on sanctuary policies.
