Study finds fake news spread by social media users not bots

Fake news spreads faster than true news on Twitter—thanks to people, not bots

The study was published in the March 9 issue of the scientific journal Science.

With access to Twitter's historical archives, the researchers tracked 126,000 cascades of news stories tweeted more than 4.5 million times by some 3 million people from 2006 to 2017. And the findings are remarkable.

The study authors said automated Twitter accounts, or bots, were not to blame for the faster spread of false rumors.

"I find it disturbing", said Aral, who said he has been studying the impact of social media on society for more than 10 years.

Deb Roy, who also co-authored the study, said his team was "somewhere between surprised and stunned" by the results. To do this, they used six independent fact-checking organizations whose classifications showed a strong agreement.

Finally the team made a decision to look more closely at the tweets themselves. "It's not just 'other people'".

"The more unusual and more sensational the story sounds, the more likely they are going to retweet", Kahan said. "Like we were looking at two different species of something". It also cites an analysis that found the average American likely encountered one to three fake news stories in the month before the 2016 US election.

The trio of researchers examined the likelihood that a tweet would create a "rumor cascade"-that is, a chain of retweets".

False information travels six times faster than the truth and reaches far more people on Twitter. But more are likely to come.

According to experts at MIT, a false-news tweet is 70% more likely to be retweeted than a true story. Usually ordinary people, too, they found: so-called "verified" users and those with many followers were not usually the source of some of the most popular untrue viral posts. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, meanwhile, recently appealed for outside help to deal with the platform's fake news and harassment problem.

They call for more high-quality research into the false news problem and what can be done about it, pointing to reforms in the early 20th century that gave rise to legitimate newspapers with ethics promoting objectivity and credibility out of the ashes of a boisterous yellow press. Factcheck.org, Jamieson said, looks more at context and does not label something either true or false.

Prof Aral said: "False news is more novel, and people are more likely to share novel information" and as he explained, there is a speed factor attached to the spread of these stories: "people who share novel information are seen as being in the know".

Twitter funded the study but had no say in the outcome, according to the researchers. The spread of false information is also driven by human behavior, as researchers accounted for the influence of bots in their analysis.

"I was somewhat surprised to see bots didn't play a starring role", Roy said. "Whereas if it were just bots, we would need a technological solution".

A Twitter spokeswoman declined to comment on the study's findings, but pointed to tweets by company chief executive officer Jack Dorsey last week pledging to "increase the collective health, openness, and civility of public conversation, and to hold ourselves publicly accountable towards progress". In an article accompanying the Science study Thursday, Menczer joined 15 other prominent academics calling for greater research into the spread of misinformation online.

The study authors aimed to be apolitical in distinguishing what was true or false. "The rise of fake news highlights the erosion of long-standing institutional bulwarks against misinformation in the internet age", one group wrote in Science magazine. "It's hard for me to put into a larger context how anxious to be", he added.
