New $10 bill unveiled featuring civil rights activist Viola Desmond

Desmond New Bill 20180302

New $10 Canadian bill...

The new $10 bill features Nova Scotia civil-rights champion Viola Desmond alongside a Winnipeg landmark, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

A new bill on the introduction of vertical banknote $10 with a picture of Desmond, was presented on the afternoon of 8 March the Minister of Finance of Canada bill Morneau and the Governor of the Bank of Canada Stephen Poloz at the library Halifax Central Library. She later was moved to tears with the tributes, saying "I will never ever forget this day".

He says she stood up for what she believed in and helped make Canada a better place. Other nations like the USA and United Kingdom have also moved to change the imbalance between men and women depicted on money.

The bill marks a growing recognition of Desmond's refusal to leave the whites-only section of a Nova Scotia movie theatre on November 8, 1946 - almost a decade before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Alabama - and the seminal role it played in Canada's civil rights movement. Poloz says it was long past time for a bank note to feature an iconic Canadian woman. And when I say suffered, I don't mean that you just couldn't do anything anymore.

Statue attacks spread, MHA directed states to act firmly
Late on Tuesday, two persons were arrested in Thirupattur in Vellore district for vandalising Periyar's statue. Superintendent of police (South) Manchak Ipper said no political connection had been established till now.

It's going into circulation later in this year, marking the first time a Canadian woman has been featured on a circulation bill in Canada.

In addition, the law stresses the importance of its role in the civil rights movement in Canada.

The incident happened almost a decade before Rosa Parks famously refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Alabama. After being released on a $20 fine and $6 in court costs, Desmond appealed her conviction but lost.

It would take 63 years for Nova Scotia to issue Desmond, who died in 1965, a posthumous apology and pardon.

If you happened to miss Thursday's unveiling of Canada's new $10 bill it is something that you will want to look at closely.
