Please share your views on organ donation consultation

Copeland MP Trudy Harrison raised questions at a question time with the Government minister for the Department of Media Culture and Sport

People will have to opt-out of having their organs donated when they pass away under the terms of a presumed consent scheme.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has urged MPs to change the laws on organ donation in England to help "save an terrible lot of people's lives".

The DHSC is now carrying out its own consultation on automatic organ donation, after Wales adopted similar legislation in 2015.

The Private Member's Bill was introduced by Labour backbencher Geoffrey Robinson, and while it hasn't been voted into law just yet support from the government means it's highly likely that it will in the future.

"Low family rates of consent have been one of the major barriers to the donor rate increasing. So, in effect, preventing one third of available organs from being used".

"That is surely the best possible argument for supporting the Bill, which will ensure that more organs are available for donation. They go straight to the grave or to the crematorium".

Tory MP Peter Heaton-Jones said that Mr Ball's decision to allow Keira's organs to be used should serve as an "inspiration" to us all, adding that "more organs means more saved lives".

The Government Confirms Support for Opt-Out Organ Donation Bill

'Every day, three people in the United Kingdom die waiting for a donated organ.

Labour's Julie Elliott, whose 36-year-old daughter Rebecca is awaiting a suitable donor after being diagnosed with kidney disease, said a change to the rules would bring benefits to many people.

"None of us likes to think about the worst happening", he said.

"Young or old, rich or poor, there is no differentiation when such things happen, and they highlight the reality of the need to change the law to deemed consent".

He also said he hoped a change in the law would make it easier for families to discuss the issue.

"On the basis that we could save 200 lives, we will wholeheartedly support this Bill".
