Met Eireann say cold weather warnings could be upgraded to Status Red

Cold and possibly very cold- UK Met Office has generated two images of what the weather could look like next week

While it isn't possible to accurately forecast too far into next week, early indications are that the bitter cold spell will last until the end of the week and into next weekend.

Prof Adam Scaife, from the Met Office Hadley Centre, said: "This warming results from a breakdown of the usual high-altitude westerly winds and it often leads to a switch in our weather: with cold easterly conditions more likely to dominate subsequent United Kingdom weather".

The Met Office said the air over the United Kingdom will probably be at its coldest since March 2013 and warned London and the South East of England will be first impacted by snow, with "significant" accumulations expected.

Phil Garner, forecaster at Weatherquest, said the weather front had picked up its dramatic moniker as it is made up of cold air from Siberia which has made its way across eastern Europe.

Saturday is looking to be the coldest day of 2018 so far.

The PHE alert warns a "significant and prolonged" spell of potentially unsafe winter weather is about to grip the nation.

However, next week is predicted to be exceptionally cold with daytime temperatures staying below freezing with -5 values expected overnight next week.

"There's going to be snow showers coming through with this cold weather".

"Cold, wintery conditions are expected to continue to Wednesday and likely beyond.

The cold easterly wind will bring an element of wind chill which will make it feel colder in the south".

Speaking exclusively to KentOnline, Mr Bowles said we can expect some travel disruption.
