'Hero' pretends to be girl's mother to stop attempted kidnapping

New charges filed against Perris couple accused of abusing their 13 children

The California parents accused of torturing and starving their 13 children will be in court Friday for a procedural hearing.

The couple was arrested last month after their 17-year-old daughter escaped from the family's home in Perris, California, and called 911.

"There was prolonged abuse; it did involve beatings and strangulations", Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin told reporters last month.

Officers found some of the children chained to beds and other large objects with padlocks.

They've also been introduced to Harry Potter movies and iPads, Mr Osborn said.

As the legal case against the couple moves forward, the children they allegedly imprisoned for years are moving on with their lives and making decisions on their own for the first time.

Having choice over what they can wear is a big deal to them, representative attorney Jack Osborn told CBS News. "Our clients need time, space, and privacy while they receive services and begin the hard process of rebuilding their lives", Caleb Mason, an attorney for the siblings, said in a recent statement.

Killed in Mogadishu Blasts
In October, more than 500 people were killed when a suicide bomber detonated a truck full of explosives in the capital. Extremist group al Shabab claimed responsibility for the blasts via its Andalus radio arm.

Policecorporal Anthony Bertagna said the anonymous woman's "motherly instincts kicked in" and she told the alleged kidnapper "that's my child, give her back to me" three times before the suspect let the child go.

"The frequent appearance of photographs or video images of the Turpins in the media may taint potential jurors, prejudice them against the Turpins and make it necessary to explore a possible motion for a change of venue", Macher wrote in a court motion.

"I was thinking, 'Oh my gosh, I'm going to live, '" the girl said. 'Some of them have never really seen a toothbrush before. 'They all have their own aspirations and their own interests and now they may have an opportunity to address those, which is really exciting'.

Osborn and Caleb Mason, who are representing the older siblings, said that the staff at the Corona Medical Center converted part of the center to make it more comfortable, including an outdoor area where they can exercise.

CBS says the seven communicate by Skype with their younger siblings who are being cared for separately. Things that we just take for granted mean so much to these kids'.

The older children have plans to visit the beach, mountains and movies, and in the long term, attend college and pursue careers.
