Turkey 'strongly' condemns Dutch MPs' recognising Armenian 'genocide'

Only UN and international court's genocide rulings 'binding' for Dutch gov't: FM

Turkey accepts that many Christian Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire were killed during World War One, but contests the figures and denies that the killings were orchestrated.

But acting Dutch Foreign Minister Sigrid Kaag quickly tempered the motion, saying even though the ruling four-party coalition voted for the motion, the government will "restrain" itself.

The Dutch Parliament on Thursday voted to recognize that Turkey committed genocide against Armenians during World War I. Its foreign ministry strongly condemned the Dutch parliament's approval of the motion and noted the Dutch government's response to it.

"Baseless decisions taken by the parliament of a country that turned a blind eye to the still painful genocide at Srebrenica have no place in history or in justice", the Foreign Ministry's statement said.

For some years, the Dutch government has taken a nuanced position, speaking of the "question of the Armenian genocide", with Kaag reiterating Thursday that that would remain the case.

In another sign of Turkish irritation at the Dutch MPs, Ankara reminded the Netherlands of the massacre of some 8,000 Muslim men and boys by Bosnian Serbs during the war at Srebrenica in 1995 where Dutch peacekeepers were stationed.

Kaag told lawmakers in the Second Chamber of parliament that the Dutch government only recognizes events as genocide if that description is supported by a binding U.N. Security Council resolution or a verdict from an global court.

"This cabinet wants to be very careful about relations with Turkey, which have been better", she said.

It also agreed to send a cabinet representative to Yerevan in April for the commemorations of the killings and every five years afterwards.

Dozens of countries have recognized the mass killings as genocide, including almost half of the member states of the European Union.

She reiterated that the government acts in compliance with the U.N. Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

So far, parliaments in more than 20 countries, including Germany, have voted for laws or resolutions explicitly recognising the Armenian "genocide".

Ankara doesn't have that diplomatic rebuke available with the Netherlands - relations between the two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies are at such a low ebb that neither country now has an ambassador in the other's capital.

Zurcher added that although the latest move was sure to strain Turkish-Dutch relations it would not "break fundamental ties between the two countries".
