Bangladeshi, Burmese officials visit Rohingya trapped at border

"We want India to mount pressure on Myanmar so that they quickly take back their displaced people", she told a group of Indian journalists who met her at the prime minister's official Ganabhaban residence on Tuesday evening. He did not explain how the names had been chosen.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Bangladesh and Myanmar officials discussed the repatriation of over 6,500 Rohingyas living in the no man's land near Tambru along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.

Hundreds of Rohingya were reportedly killed in the violence, and many houses and villages burned to the ground.

The majority of Rohingya who fled are in camps in the Cox's Bazar district of southern Bangladesh, but several thousand in the border buffer zone are stuck.

"It is about taking them back to Myanmar", Relief and Refugee Repatriation commissioner Mohammad Abul Kalam, told Reuters on Monday.

Hasina also sought India's support in repatriation of over a million Rohingyas to Myanmar, fearing that their prolonged stay in Bangladesh could create security risks. Kyaw Swe did not speak to reporters, according to The Associated Press report on Friday.

Myanmar has said it will accept back people holding "national verification" registration cards. He would not say exactly when the repatriation would start.

"They said they will take them all in three phases", he said, AP reported.

A spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which will not be involved in the talks, said the agency was concerned the Rohingya may be forcibly returned toMyanmar without due consideration for their safety.

Khan said Bangladesh expressed its desire for safe and secure conditions and a proper infrastructure for the refugees' return.

Hasina directed the foreign office to hold a dialogue with five countries, including India, which have borders with Myanmar, hoping that the initiative will help in solving the Rohingya crisis. Speaking to Bangladeshi President Abdul Hamid, he said Myanmar is ready to implement the recommendations of a panel led by former United Nations chief Kofi Annan and also accept the refugees. Abedin also quoted the minister as saying that Myanmar will implement the recommendations by a commission led by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Around 700,000 refugees crossed the border after the Myanmar Army launched an ethnic cleansing of the Rohingyas on Aug 25 previous year following insurgent attacks on security forces in Rakhine State. In retaliation, the military and Buddhist mobs began "clearance operations" against Rohingya.

Myanmar's security forces have been accused of atrocities against the Rohingya, including killing, rape and arson. The UN and the USA say they believe the violence constitutes ethnic cleansing.

The Rohingya have always been treated as outsiders in Myanmar, even though their families have lived in the country for generations.

Meanwhile, diplomatic missions in Myanmar have urged the Myanmar authorities to address the underlying problems including security, freedom of movement, access to livelihoods, health and education and citizenship, reports UNB.
