White House proposing to change how millions of Americans eat

What Can SNAP Buy? | Food and Nutrition Service

The Trump administration has proposed a drastic change to the SNAP program, which would slash food stamps benefits for millions of people and families, and replace them with "Harvest Boxes".

The proposal, led by White House budget director Mick Mulvaney, is being compared to start-up meal delivery company Blue Apron, with low-income families receiving a product dubbed "America's Harvest Box" by the Department of Agriculture every month, according to a report from Fortune.

While talking to reporters on Monday, Mulvaney said that he was not interested in the theft of someone else's copyright and that the food stamp recipients in the United States would be receiving actual food instead of cash.

The plan was criticized due to questions about whether the boxes would contain healthy ingredients and how poor Americans without a auto would pick up the boxes.

A Trump administration proposal to reduce food-stamp benefits is casting a cloud over USA dollar-store chains.

The USDA estimates that the proposal would save $129.2 billion over a period of ten years, would decrease food stamp fraud, and would enhance the nutrition content of the program.

Nutrition programs, including SNAP, made up about 80 percent of the USDA's budget in the most recent farm bill. The food-stamp program served 42.2 million people during the 2017 fiscal year, with many spending the benefits at supermarkets.

Here's how people reacted to Elizabeth Warren's speech
At Wednesday's speech, Warren acknowledged that she isn't enrolled in a tribe and that her family isn't included in tribe rolls. Some Native American groups and individuals have also criticized her for claiming to have the heritage.

This package is being described in the budget as a mix of "shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit and vegetables".

"USDA America's Harvest Box is a bold, innovative approach to providing nutritious food to people who need assistance feeding themselves and their families", USDA Sec.

"The thought of that number going up from our current 1300 households a month, anything upwards of that, yeah, how are we going to source that?" said McCullen. "If those proposals move further, I think it would be important for the helping agencies and non-profits like the Mississippi Food Network, for the Society of St. Andrew, for food pantries, to really make SNAP participants aware of those different benefits and the other things out there".

He also questions WHERE the food would be send if you're homeless.

The projected savings, according to the White House, will be $130 billion over a decade. The food bank says they would feel the immediate domino effect of this cut.

She said she isn't sure how effective the plan would be, especially for those who are homeless.
