We don't communalise our martyrs: Army after Owaisi's comments on Muslim soldiers

'We don't communalise martyrs': Army hits back after Asaduddin Owaisi remark

'We don't communalise martyrs, those making statements (Owaisi) don't know the Army well, ' Lt Gen. Devraj Anbu, the Northern Army commander, said at a press conference here.

He added, "Enemy is frustrated and is trying for softer targets, when they fail at borders they attack on camps".

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who visited Jammu on Monday following the attack on the Army camp, blamed Pakistan for the attack on Sunjuwan military camp and said it will pay for the "misadventure". "We need to address this trend. In 2017, we focused on leadership and eliminated it", Lieutenant General Devraj Anbu said.

The statement came after Owaisi courted controversy by saying that five out of the seven martyrs in the Sunjwan terror attack were Muslims. Pointing out that Hizbul Mujahideen, Lashkar-e-Toiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad are all hand in glove with each other, he advocated sustained counter-insurgency operations.

"In this (Sunjuwan attack) incident, the Kashmiri Muslims have laid down their lives. Now everybody is silent on their death", Owaisi had said. Muslims are dying for the country, but are called Pakistani. "While immediately behind the borders we have strengthened ourselves and we are very well prepared, it picked up soft targets", he said.

In response to a question about an insiders role in the Sunjuwan terror attack and any plans to shift the training centre of the regiment from Srinagar, Anbu said, "I am in a uniformed force and do not distinguish the personnel under my command".

"But to our fear and concern, the local terrorists taking up arms continue to increase and you know there are a large number of reasons for that, whether it is social, economic, political, religious...", the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Northern Command said.

"We need to stop the adversary from pushing in infiltrators", he added.

On the impact of filing of an FIR against Major Aditya Kumar over the killing of three youths in south Kashmir's Shopian district last month, he said, "I am heading the Northern Command and I can say it with confidence that the issue of Major Aditya has not dented the morale of my troops, not even a bit, not even an iota".
