Veteran kicker Sebastian Janikowski will not return to Raiders

Oakland Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski won't return after 18-year run with team

He will become a free agent in March, shortly after his 40th birthday.

Janikowski was replaced by kicker Giorgio Tavecchio a year ago when a back injury kept him on injured reserve throughout the season. Many 20-something NFL-watchers literally can not remember a league that did not feature Janikowski kicking for Oakland.

Iconic owner Al Davis drafted "Seabass" with the 17th overall selection in the 2000 NFL Draft when Jon Gruden was in his third year of his first tenure with the Silver & Black.

With teams always in need of solid kickers, Janikowski will not have trouble finding work in 2018.

This year is the Year of the Dog in China , which is on a 12-year cycle with a new animal chosen to represent each year. Various dishes including meat, vegetables, soup and candies are placed on the table including the most essential: fish.

Janikowski just completed the final season of a four-year, $15.1 million contract.

Known for his big leg, Janikowski banged in 55 field goals from 50 yards or longer during his time in Oakland. So while Janikowski will nearly assuredly land a spot on some team's training camp roster, it's hard to imagine he'll end up on the final roster when it's all said and done. Only Adam Vinatieri and Phil Dawson have made more field goals since 2000.

His last appearance came in the team's second preseason game in August.

Giorgio Tavecchio, 27, replaced Janikowski this past season and made 16 of 21 field-goal attempts, with a long of 53, and missed only one of his 34 extra-point tries. Janikowski spent the season on injured reserve.
