London airport reopens after World War II-era bomb removed

Police say the bomb was found just before 9am this morning

London City Airport has reopened after an unexploded 500kg World War Two bomb was safely moved from the area.

Metropolitan Police said the 1.5 metre-long tapered-end shell, which was found 15 metres underwater in King George V Dock in east London on Sunday, has been moved.

In a message sent from its official Twitter account on Sunday evening, the airport had confirmed the discovery of a World War Two bomb in the river at King George V Dock.

Robert Sinclair, the airport's chief executive, said Tuesday the evacuation zone has now been lifted and the airport will operate as normal.

Residents who were evacuated to temporary accommodation have been told they can return to their homes.

The airport's terminal building reopened at 04:30 GMT and the airfield opened at 06:30.

The airport is frequently used by business passengers and is close to London's financial hub in Canary Wharf. Service on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) was part suspended due to the incident, however Transport for London said a full service had resumed on the DLR today.

An unexploded Second World War bomb that caused widespread travel disruption will be towed out to sea for nine hours before being detonated in a controlled explosion. More than 4.5 million people used the airport previous year.
