Israeli police recommend indictments of Netanyahu in corruption cases

Netanyahu and Trump meet

"Let me reassure you: the coalition is stable. We're going to continue to work together for the good of Israeli citizens until the end of the term", he said.

One case, known as Case 1000, alleges the "committing of crimes of bribery, fraud and breach of trust by the prime minister, Mr Benjamin Netanyahu".

"Some have ended with thunderous police recommendations like those of tonight".

Beloved by his base and respected even by his adversaries as a guardian of Israel's security, Netanyahu remains the dominant figure on the Israeli stage, his combined 12 years as prime minister closing in on the record of David Ben-Gurion, Israel's principal founder.

The State's Attorney is reportedly upset the police forced upon them an unprepared case against Netanyahu. "I can say this is a slanted document, extreme, full of holes, like Swiss cheese, and holds no water".

Israeli police have recommended that Benjamin Netanyahu be indicted on bribery and breach of trust charges in two corruption cases.

In Case 2000, police say Netanyahu discussed "bartering" with Arnon "Noni" Mozes, the owner of one of Israel's leading newspapers, Yedioth Ahronoth, which is regularly critical of the Prime Minister. These police recommendations come in wake of an ongoing campaign by Netanyahu to discharge the credibility of his investigators. According to recordings obtained by the police, Mr Netanyahu offered to help decrease the circulation of the paper's main competitor if the publisher promised more favourable news coverage in return.

A public debate has always been under way in Israel on whether Mandelblit, who has avoided interviews, might be reluctant to prosecute a sitting prime minister for the first time in Israeli history, especially one who promoted him through government ranks.

However, speaking on Israeli television, Mr. Netanyahu said the allegations against him were baseless and they would be dismissed.

But he stressed Netanyahu is innocent until proven guilty and that he would wait for the attorney general's decision.

Among the witnesses in the case against Netanyahu is his arch-rival Lapid, and that poll showed that 35 percent believed him when he said that Netanyahu had been involved in corrupt practices; 30 percent believed Netanyahu's denial of Lapid's charges; and 35 percent said they weren't sure.

He was chosen the Prime Minister of Israel in 2009.

The 68-year-old premier has been questioned seven times by police and has called the investigation an attempt by political opponents to force him from office.

Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who heads the ultra-nationalist Yisrael Beitenu party, said that as long as Netanyahu was not convicted he should stay in office.

Avraham Diskin, a political science professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said none of Netanyahu's coalition partners had any incentive to rock the boat.

The Israeli Police made this recommendation after a year-long investigation into allegations that PM Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, accepted gifts from Hollywood mogul Arnon Milchan and Australian billionaire James Packer.

While an indictment alone would not legally oblige Netanyahu to resign, he would likely face mounting pressure to do so.
