Closed-door trial of Palestinian teen opens

This video shows Ahed Tamimi, 16 years old, walking up to two Israeli soldiers standing in her driveway.

Ahed was arrested and indicted on 12 charges including assaulting an Israeli soldier and throwing stones after a video of her slapping an Israeli soldier in her home's yard went viral.

At the beginning of the session, with many diplomats and journalists in attendance, the judge chose to close the proceedings for "Tamimi's good" because she is still a minor.

"Stay strong, stay strong", shouted her father, Bassem, from the back row. Ahed has been denied bail and her trial will begin today, 13 February 2018.

Trials of minors in military court are typically closed, but Tamimi's lawyer said previous hearings for the teenager were open and she argued for it to remain that way.

On Tuesday morning Tamimi, wearing prison uniform and with her hands and feet in restraints, was led into the courtroom at the Ofer military prison near Ramallah for preliminary trial hearings. "So the way to keep it out of everybody's eyes is to close the doors". Despite objections from the Tamimi family and Ahed's lawyer, all media and foreign diplomats were barred from entering the court room during the trial.

The petition starts by describing the events leading up to the arrest and indictment of Tamimi before comparing the 17-year-old Palestinian girl to Trayvon Martin, the young boy who was shot dead by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in Florida in 2012. However she also faces five additional counts of violence and incitement, including stone throwing, taking part in violent protests and incitement to violent action.

Prosecutors requested more time to prepare a response and a new date was set for March 11, according to Lasky.

There were 352 Palestinian children held in Israeli prisons as security detainees at the end of a year ago, according to B'Tselem, an Israeli human rights organization.

Trump has promised to propose a peace plan, but Palestinian officials have said they fear any USA offer would fall far short of their demands, including a capital in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem. Several members of the family have been detained and killed over the years.

Others mocked the screaming and crying of the female soldier as she was attacked, saying that it invalidated the IDF's unassailable reputation.

Ahed has been a regular in Internet videos for years.

UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in the Palestinian Territory Michael Lynk and Chair-Rapporteur of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention José Antonio Guevara Bermúdez [official profiles] demanded Tamimi's immediate release during the proceedings and called for future hearings to be held in strict accordance with global legal standards.

The scuffle took place amid clashes and protests against US President Donald Trump's controversial recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. "The Israeli authorities must release her without delay".

ESTRIN: She's been confronting soldiers throughout her childhood.

"As an unarmed girl, Ahed posed no threat during the altercation with the two Israeli soldiers who were heavily armed and wearing protective clothing", Magdalena Mughrabi, deputy director for Amnesty International's Middle East and Africa program, said in a statement Monday.

Her family says letters of messages of support have flooded in from the region and the world.
