Trump administration proposes 'privatising' International Space Station

Nasa is now studying the feasibility of extending the life of the ISS to 2028, and possibly beyond, with the White House urging the space agency to focus on landing on the moon again in preparation for further deep space missions.

The budget proposal, due to be released February 12, will include a request for $150 million to support the development of commercial capabilities in low Earth orbit to succeed the ISS, for which NASA could be a customer, according to an internal agency document obtained by SpaceNews.

In its budget request to be released Monday, the administration would request $150 million in fiscal year 2019, with more in additional years, "to enable the development and maturation of commercial entities and capabilities which will ensure that commercial successors to the ISS-potentially including elements of the ISS-are operational when they are needed".

The ISS has cost the U.S. government over $100bn (£72.18bn) to build and operate over the years and to pull out of the project after spending so much on it is not something that will go down without opposition, notes the report. He also argued that it would be "one of the dumbest things" to stop funding an asset with "serious usable life ahead". Andrew Rush, chief executive of 3-D printing company Made In Space, said plainly that the ISS isn't built for profit seeking.

The worldwide agreements that the United States is involved in regarding the ISS could also pose a difficulty in attempts of privatisation.

The US plan, the paper said, involves privatising the ISS, a low-orbit space station piloted by the US space agency NASA and developed jointly with its Russian counterpart. NASA, which was the de-facto leader of the program for its first decade, pulled back some of its support for the station when it ended the space shuttle program in 2011. "It's inherently always going to be an global construct that requires USA government involvement and multi-national cooperation". The US is mulling to privatise the costly space station.

Cruz also said that he hoped the recent reports that NASA might cancel funding "prove as unfounded as Bigfoot, ' and blamed the decision on the 'numskulls" at the Office of Management and Budget. Mark Mulqueen, Boeing's space station program manager, previously stated that "walking away from the International Space Station now would be a mistake, threatening American leadership and hurting the commercial market as well as the scientific community".

Will The International Space Station Really Go Private?

"In support of enabling a timely development and transition of commercial capabilities in LEO where NASA could be one of many customers in the mid-2020s, the Administration is proposing to end direct Federal support for the ISS in 2025 under the current NASA-directed operating model", the document states.
