BMW X4 OFFICIALLY revealed with slicker looks and more room

2018 BMW X4

Now, entering its second-generation, the 2019 X4 gets major changes with a long list of new standards that'll help it stand out from the crowd in a super competitive compact SUV segment - going head-to-head with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe and Range Rover Evoque.

Externally, the X4 looks very similar to its X3 sibling, sporting the same kidney grille and bi-LED headlights. Thanks to the low roofline, expect the rear quarters to be a little more cramped than the more upright X3, likewise its luggage area. In profile, the wheel arches are now squared off and the alloy wheels, although still 10-spoke, have a new design. Another new feature, Parking Assistant Plus, will steer the 4.7 metre long X4 into parallel and perpendicular parking spaces.

When it goes on sale in July, the 2019 BMW X4 will cost more than $51,400, including destination, which is almost $3,000 more than the model it replaces.

Starting with that latter engine, the M40d comes in as BMW's first M Performance diesel for the X4 and could be adopted by other vehicle models in the showroom, such as the platform-sharing X3. The front fascia and fog lights have been redone on the new X4 to look slightly more aggressive. Higher-spec models also have an extra Sport Plus mode. Buyers will be able to select between various trimming colours and options, with the M Performance models getting sports seats and M highlights.

All of the powertrains use all-wheel drive (eschewing the trend of front- or rear-wheel-drive entry models), and all of them use eight-speed automatic transmissions.

A 265hp diesel engine and 360hp petrol engine are set to follow, but United Kingdom prices for these are not yet confirmed. Acceleration from 0-100km/h is completed in a respectable 8.3 seconds, while top speed is rated at 215km/h. Power 190 hp at 4,000 rpm, torque 400 Nm at 1,750 - 2,500 rpm. A more powerful version of the same engine is fitted in the xDrive25d, with 228bhp and 0-62mph taking 6.8 seconds.

Finally, there are M variants available as well, powered by petrol as well as diesel.

Meanwhile, the diesel range starts with the xDrive20d, featuring a 2.0-litre oiler putting out 140kW of power and 400Nm of torque. There's also 184hp 2.0-litre petrol-turbo. The xDrive25i manages the 0-100km/h benchmark in 6.8 seconds, while top speed is rated at 230km/h.

Finally, the new M40d flagship (pictured) gets an uprated version of the 3.0-litre oiler, with outputs rated at 240kW and 680Nm respectively.

The M40i and xDrive30d are earmarked as late starters, however, with worldwide production not available until August - so expect a staggered launch much like the M40i variant of the X3. The redesigned X4 will be unveiled at the Geneva auto show in early March.
