Barnaby Joyce 'resisted' removing girlfriend Vikki Campion from office

Mrs Joyce begged Father Brennan- who is a family friend- to counsel the deputy prime minister to end the relationship

Despite the fact that Campion is due to give birth to Barnaby Joyce's child in two months, and the fact that they've now moved in together, she's still not listed as his partner in any capacity.

Labor is continuing to press the Coalition over the matter.

The Canberra insider, whose husband works for the Prime Minister, told the "sun is setting" on the Nationals leader's career.

Mrs Joyce begged Father Brennan - who is a family friend - to counsel the deputy prime minister to end the relationship, The Courier Mail reported.

Speaking on the Today show on Monday, Political Editor Chris Uhlmann said there was "growing discontent" in the National Party, with party elders believing Mr Joyce was doing irreparable brand damage.

'I went over to the bar and he was very, very drunk and almost falling over, ' she said.

Mr Joyce is expecting a child with his former staffer Vikki Campion, having split with his wife of 24-years, Natalie in December last year.

"This has been a searing personal experience for Natalie, our daughters and for Vikki - criticise me if you wish but please have some regard for them".

Ms Campion began working in Mr Joyce's ministerial office in August 2016.

The revelation prompted questions to be raised about Ms Campion appointment to jobs created especially for her in two different National Party offices.

Under the ministerial code of conduct, a minister's "close relatives and partners are not to be appointed to positions in their ministerial or electorate offices and must not be employed in the offices of other members of the executive government without the prime minister's express approval".

She had previously worked as a senior adviser to New South Wales Police Minister Troy Grant when the Dubbo MP was deputy premier and was an adviser to Racing Minister Paul Toole when the Bathurst MP had the local government portfolio.

When Opposition Leader Bill Shorten asked Turnbull whether Joyce would be acting prime minister when Turnbull visits the U.S. next week, and whether he still retained confidence in Joyce, Turnbull kept his answer as brief as possible.

Now however, Joyce finds himself at odds with his own base - although colleague Nigel Scullion said constituents described it more as "a bit of a pickle".

The deputy prime minister will take over the top job when Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull flies to the United States to meet with U.S. president Donald Trump.

The spokesman said the deputy prime minister was still married when Ms Campion's appointments were made.

Mr Turnbull was grilled in parliament about the definition of the word "partner" in the code of conduct and he replied with the definition used by Centrelink.

Meanwhile, Mr Joyce's career is "over" according to prominent media commentator Nikki Savva.

"It might be that there is no case to answer here, but I think the deputy prime minister and the prime minister should be prepared to answer questions about taxpayer money".

Mr Joyce also denied allegations he misbehaved at an awards ceremony for rural women in 2011.
