Pratt & Whitney Engines Are Giving IndiGo A Big Headache

An Indi Go airlines’ aircraft taxis at Mumbai's Chhatrapathi Shivaji International Airport

The EASA had on Friday issued an emergency airworthiness directive for A320 neo planes fitted with PW1100 engines having a particular serial number. Also, a Pratt & Whitney representative reportedly has detailed the engine failures involve a seal in the high-pressure compressor (HPC) aft hub of a limited number of the total PW1100G engines in service.

This is the second occasion when the airline has been forced to ground planes on account of P&W engine problems.

Pratt & Whitney had no immediate comment on the latest Airbus decision.

Airbus brought the issue to the European aviation agency's attention, a spokesperson said, and the company has outlined safety recommendations for airlines until Pratt & Whitney can fix or replace the engines.

Pratt & Whitney's new generation PurePower PW1100G geared turbofan (GTF) engines powering the Airbus A320neo family aircraft has ran into new problems.

Israel has to be 'very careful' with settlements

Air safety officials in Europe clamped down on flights by planes powered by affected Pratt & Whitney engines, citing "several occurrences of engine in-flight shutdown", according to the Wall Street Journal.

Its customers have also become less forgiving about performance standards as schedules tighten and airlines squeeze more flight hours out of their aircraft.

"Our precautionary measure of grounding the three aircraft resulted in cancellations of some of our flights", it said. "We have three aircraft with the particular engine configuration, which have been flagged by EASA", IndiGo said in a release. Both A320neos and A321neos are affected. "IndiGo has only three such affected aircraft", the official said on Saturday. Aircraft with one affected engine are restricted from certain extended-range flights.

According to the filing, IndiGo would continue to add A320 ceo and ATR aircraft to its fleet.
