NBC Apologizes for Olympic Analyst's Ignorant and Insensitive Remarks

NBC Issues Apology To Korean People After Correspondent's Insensitive Comment

Ramo pointed out that Japan occupied Korea from 1910 to 1945, following it up with, "but every Korean will tell you that Japan as a cultural and technological and economic example has been so important to their own transformation".

Ramo, who has written books on China and is a director of Starbucks Corp and FedEx Corp, said as athletes paraded into the Games stadium that "every Korean will tell you that Japan is a cultural, technological and economic example that has been so important to their own transformation". "We understand the Korean people were insulted by these comments and we apologize".

AMERICAN TV network NBC was forced to fire one of its Olympic analysts after he inexplicably said Koreans are grateful for Japan's role in their economic development - while ignoring the one-time imperial power's brutalisation of the peninsula.

During the live broadcast of Friday's opening ceremony, Joshua Cooper Ramo, a commentator for the USA broadcaster's coverage of the Olympics, said, "Now representing Japan, a country which occupied Korea from 1910 to 1945".

Unfortunately for NBC, Ramo displayed a shocking ignorance of Korean history and got the entire nation of South Korea enraged at some of his comments. An online petition demanded an apology, and NBC did so on its NBCSN cable network Saturday and formally to the Pyeongchang Olympic organizers. That split gave us North Korea and South Korea, and a long history of conflict between the nations that continues to this day.

The Japanese team during the Winter Olympics opening ceremony.

NBC has been broadcasting the Olympic Games since 1964 - and certainly, over the course of more than five decades, mistakes have been made.

The controversy started when analyst Joshua Cooper Ramo, who was hired to bring historical context to NBC's coverage, noted how significant Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit was.

The network had no real explanation for the insane comment other than to say sorry.
