NASA released incredible images of dwarf planets

NASA probe “New Horizons” snaps farthest-ever photo from Earth

It thus broke the previous record set in February 1990, when the apparatus "Voyager 1" got famous photograph Pale Blue Dot from a distance of about of 6.06 billion kilometers from Earth.

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft captured these images at a distance of 3.79 billion miles from Earth - the farthest from our planet an image has ever been made.

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft recently turned its telescopic camera toward a field of stars, snapped an image - and made history. They're also the closest-ever images of Kuiper Belt objects.

"New Horizons has always been a mission of firsts - first to explore Pluto, first to explore the Kuiper Belt, fastest spacecraft ever launched", Alan Stern, principal investigator of the New Horizons mission, released Thursday.

The kicker? That record is likely to be broken again within a matter of months.

Since then, no spacecraft has been in a position to break Voyager 1's record - until now.

The New Horizons broke a 28-year-old record held by the Voyager 1.

But the New Horizons photos are a worthwhile reminder that as technology improves, and as NASA probes and crafts work their way deeper and deeper into space, there's going to be a wealth of interesting, engrossing, and lovely photos as a result.

"Mission scientists study the images to determine the objects' shapes and surface properties, and to check for moons and rings", the space agency says. It is due to pass by an object there known as 2014 MU69 at the beginning of 2019. "The spacecraft also is making almost continuous measurements of the plasma, dust and neutral-gas environment along its path".

"New Horizons has always been a mission of firsts - first to explore Pluto, first to explore the Kuiper Belt, fastest spacecraft ever launched", Alan Stern, the mission's principal investigator, said in the NASA statement.

Following a December 9, 2017, course correction maneuver to refine New Horizons' journey to MU69, the spacecraft was put into hibernation on December 21.

Launched in 2006, the spacecraft made headlines in 2015 when its flyby of Pluto sent back vivid, high-definition images of the cold, icy dwarf planet that used to be but a smudge on telescopes.
