DMK moves Madras HC against Jayalalithaa's portrait in state Assembly

The late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa

A section of anti-corruption activists has opposed the decision to unveil former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's portrait in the Assembly on Monday on grounds of "moral impropriety"."Jayalalithaa was a convicted criminal".

Contending that Jayalalithaa was convicted posthumously in a corruption case, opposition leaders have objected to the decision.

However, noting that the bench has to hear a plea moved by Congress leader P Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram challenging the lookout notice issued by the CBI, as per the direction of the Supreme Court, the bench said that it would take up the DMK's plea on Tuesday.

After her death, the DMK demanded that Jayalalithaa's portraits be removed from government offices.

The plea urged the court to grant interim direction directing the authorities to forthwith remove the portrait of Jayalalithaa from the precincts of the assembly, pending disposal of the above plea.

Jayalalithaa now joins Mahatma Gandhi, Periyar EV Ramasamy, CN Annadurai, K Kamaraj, Thiruvalluvar, BR Ambedkar, Muthuramalinga Thevar, C Rajagopalachari, Quaide Millath and her mentor MG Ramachandran as the first woman on the walls of the assembly.

"The firms and companies were operating from the residence of Jayalalithaa and it can not be accepted that she was unaware of the same even though she feigned ignorance about the activities carried on by Sasikala", the court has said of the companies in whose names properties were bought.

As the AIADMK government is gearing up for the unveiling of the portrait DMDK president Vijayakanth said, "Jayalalithaa was convicted by the court in the disproportionate assets case".

However, the BJP begged to differ, saying that notwithstanding the conviction, there was nothing wrong in unveiling the portrait as Jayalalithaa had worked for the state's welfare. He called upon the government to drop the idea at once and said his party would appr-oach the court to stop initiative, if necessary.

When pointed out that the Supreme Court had said charges against stood abated, he argued that the judges had not exonerated her in the case either. "There is nothing wrong in opening her portrait in TN Assembly hall", she added.

State Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal unveiled the portrait in the presence of Chief Minister Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister Pannerselvam and other MLAs.
