Va. Tech knocks off #2 Virginia 61-60 in OT

Virginia could be No. 1 if it beats Virginia Tech

Justin Robinson and the Hokies knocked off No. 2 Virginia in one of the biggest wins in program history.

Virginia Tech gave No. 2 Virginia its first loss in ACC play and first loss since early December, beating the Cavaliers at their own slow tempo pace, 61-60, in overtime on Saturday for a crucial road win. It was one of the biggest wins in Tech basketball history.

Staple Saturday night's victory in JPJ Arena with the Hokies' home-court victory over North Carolina, and suddenly, Virginia Tech has got something going - like maybe a step up on a bid to the NCAA tournament. Clemson only scored 36 points against Virginia in January. It's about time that Virginia starts receiving some of the limelight from ESPN, as they are usually drowned out by other top 10 teams such as Purdue, Michigan State, Kansas, and Duke. But it didn't happen. The teams have split the season series for three consecutive seasons.

The Hokies did a lot of things well in this game.

With 30 seconds left, Virginia had a chance to put the lead back to five, but couldn't hit both free throws. As it turned out, the Hoos lost the game thanks in part to a pair of missed free throws by an elite free throw shooter.

With 20 seconds to go, Hokies guard Justin Robinson missed a free throw that would have virtually sealed it for Tech.

Stoke boss Lambert 'devastated' after Brighton draw
The Seagulls switched off and nearly conceded an equaliser from the restart, as Badou Ndiaye fired a volley just wide of Maty Ryan's right hand post.

Robinson had a game-high 20 points to lead the Hokies, who shot 57.1 percent in the first half, when they led by as many as 12 points, and 28.6 percent in the second half. After a Hokie turnover and a missed shot by Jerome, the two teams went to overtime. The rest of the second half was a stalemate of sorts, so let's fast forward to the important stuff.

He was one of four Virginia players to score in double figures, joining Devon Hall (16), De'Andre Hunter (14), and Kyle Guy (13).

Hall, who had a team-high 16 points, then missed the front end of a one-and-one, setting the stage for Blackshear's winning putback. It again fouled Hall.

Bennett confessed that had the Cavaliers won, "it would have been stealing that game". Blackshear finished with seven points, going 3 for 10 from the field and missing all six of his 3-point attempts, but that was all forgotten after his game-winner. And the Cavaliers failed to box out Kerry Blackshear, whose putback and free throw provided the winning margin. UVA's Ty Jerome pulled down the rebound, and the Hokies had to survive a final UVA possession. The Hokies took a 61-60 victory against one of the top teams in the RPI of your choice, not to mention the country. Ty Jerome made both baskets for the Cavaliers, and the sophomore had a chance to win with a three-pointer from National Basketball Association distance - well within his range - but the shot bounced off the front iron as the buzzer sounded in regulation. For the game, they were 22-of-51 (43.1%) overall and 11-of-29 (37.9%) from the outside. Tech played incredible defense, while making the most of its offensive opportunities. Tech's defensive performance was much better against NC State on Wednesday, and Wilson was on the court for 24 minutes of that game.

Virginia trailed nearly throughout after the Hokies reeled of 17 straight points in the first half, finally pulling even at 35-all with Hall, Ty Jerome and Hall again nailed consecutive 3-pointers early in the second half.
