Stocks open higher on Wall Street

The up-and-down swings came a day after the market entered a correction, or a drop of 10 percent from a recent peak.

The Dow Jones Transport Average index.DJT fell 1.3 percent.

The S&P 500 last confirmed a correction in January 2016, when it fell 13.3 per cent amid concerns about a slump in oil prices. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index and the technology-focused Nasdaq composite closed Thursday near correction levels as well.

Benchmark 10-year notes last rose 1/32 in price to yield 2.8276 percent, from 2.832 percent late on Wednesday. USA stocks wavered between small gains and losses in morning trading today, giving up some of a big jump that came right after the opening bell. The Dow moved in a range of more than 1000 points.

USA stocks had plunged around 4 per cent on Thursday in another dramatic session, confirming a correction that has thrown the market's almost nine-year bull run off course. After several months of slow and steady advances, stocks pitched sharply higher for the first few weeks in 2018, an impressive capper to a bull market that pushed the Dow up by about 40 percent since Donald Trump took office.

In early morning trading in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng was down 3.6% while Tokyo's Topix had fallen 2.5%. This week, as the investment website Motley Fool points out, factors that help explain the dramatic price drops include a widespread expectation among investors that the U.S. economy is heating up. Britain's FTSE 100 shed 0.7 percent.

Oil prices fell to their lowest in seven weeks amid fears of rising global supplies after Iran announced plans to increase production and USA crude output hit record highs.

The jitters have been driven by the rapid rise in 10-year Treasury yields.

An early gain in the market quickly evaporated and the selling intensified in the afternoon.

Traders are still braced for more volatility as they try to figure out if the swings of the past week are the start of a deeper correction or just a temporary blip in the USA market's nine-year bull run. The stock dropped $2, or 9.1 percent, to $19.96.

The swings followed a drop of 10%, or a correction, from the latest record highs set by major US indexes two weeks ago. Brent crude, used to price worldwide oils, slid 94 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $63.87 in London.

Bond prices rose slightly.

In currencies, the dollar clung to its earlier gains against a basket of currencies as Wall Street's major indexes edged up.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 50 points, or 0.2 percent, to 24,122.

The pivotal gauge of S&P 500 volatility, the VIX, opened at a relatively elevated 31 points and slipped to 21.74.

Markets around the world also reeled Friday from the sell-off on Wall Street on Thursday.

Amid worries over inflation and interest rates US Dow Jones index slumped 1,000 points on Friday for the second time in a week. Numerous companies that led the market's gains over the a year ago have struggled badly in the last week.

Benchmark U.S. crude lost $1.95, or 3.2 per cent, to settle at $59.20 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It was up as much as 349 shortly after the opening bell. At one point the index was down 500 points.

Stronger economic growth, fueled in part by the large tax cuts that kicked in January 1, along with a bipartisan federal budget deal struck by Senate leaders this week that would boost spending, has led to fears that interest rates will rise more quickly than anticipated to head off inflation.
