Reuters Report Details Work of Journalists Detained in Myanmar

Reuters Inn Din report highlights need for independent probe, says US

In additionto ongoing massacres, rapes and the wholesale destruction of villages by the Myanmar military in western Rakhine state that has forced almost 750,000 people to flee to Bangladesh, the food supply now appears to be another weapon that's being used against the dwindling numbers of Rohingya. The rest were shot by Myanmar troops, two of the gravediggers said.

While working on the story, two Reuters journalists were arrested by Myanmarese authorities and accused of violating the Official Secrets Act.

Reuters has published an extensive report into the killing of 10 Rohingya men in Myanmar in September, pulling from photographs and eyewitness accounts to describe how villagers and paramilitary forces killed the men execution-style and buried them in one grave.

While the Buddhist majority controls the country's military and security and is far better equipped than the minority Muslims, Rohingya are subject to persecution.

The United States says a Reuters report about the massacre of Muslims past year has highlighted the need for an independent and credible investigation into allegations of atrocities in northern Rakhine State. But the state has also repeatedly denied journalists and humanitarian workers access to Rakhine State, where more of the Rohingya lived.

Myanmar's planned participation in the Cobra Gold exercise, which starts February 13, comes as its security forces are accused of killing hundreds if not thousands of civilians and burning down villages after Rohingya militant attacks last summer. The conditions in those camps are dire, as NPR's Jason Beaubien has been reporting. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt) told the AP, which last week confirmed the presence of at least five mass graves filled with Rohingya bodies in Myanmar.

The new Reuters story, in its graphic, disturbing content, is in line with the previous accounts of atrocities in Rakhine state.

The British government, MPs of the House of Commons, political parties raised a strong voice against the oppression on the Rohingya people by Myanmar military and pursued the issue within the UN Security Council.

The Rohingya Muslims, who have been loathed by Myanmar's Buddhist majority for decades, are locked down in their villages, sometimes even in their homes and prevented from farming, fishing, foraging, trade and work, aid group says.

Reuters' account draws on interviews from the victims' families as well as testimony from villagers and security personnel, confirming the military's role in the incident. The dead men were fishermen, shopkeepers, the two teenage students and an Islamic teacher.

The story also includes photographs of the mass grave site that were taken by Wa Lone.

"As more evidence comes out about the pre-planning and intent of the Myanmar armed forces to wipe out Rohingya villages and their inhabitants, the global community ... needs to focus on how to hold the country's military leaders accountable", said HRW's deputy Asia director Phil Robertson.

"That's why the military has acknowledged the existence of this mass grave - because they knew the photos were out there", reporter Michael Sullivan told NPR in December.
