It culminated in Ms Kim meeting Mr Moon at the presidential palace, during which the handwritten invitation to the North Korean capital was delivered.

As the opening ceremony began, Kim and Moon exchanged a handshake and spoke briefly.

The meeting led to a series of reunions of families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War, as well as the launch of a joint factory park in the North's border town of Kaesong in 2004.

She was joined by other members of North Korea's delegation, including Kim Yong Nam, the country's 90-year-old nominal head of state, Choe Hwi, chairman of the country's National Sports Guidance Committee, and Ri Son Gwon, chairman of the North's agency that deals with inter-Korean affairs.

The Koreas could potentially talk about a South Korean special envoy meeting Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang or even a summit between Moon and Kim.

Moon's office says the North Korean delegates were served traditional food from the Gangwon province, a mountainous coastal area that's home to the Olympic towns of Pyeongchang and Gangneung.

However, on a stop in Alaska en route to Japan, Pence left open the possibility of a face-to-face with senior North Korean officials who are also attending Friday's ceremony in South Korea.

Pence rode to the reception with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and the two held a private conversation while waiting more than 10 minutes for a photo opportunity with Moon. Moon had earlier met Kim Yong Nam during a dinner he hosted for visiting dignitaries. It was built in the 1960s as a luxury facility for USA troops stationed in the South. The North has also sent a several hundred women-strong cheering squad, an orchestra with singers and dancers and a demonstration taekwondo team that will perform in Seoul and places near the Olympic venues. The North and the United States were also holding a series of high-level talks on Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programmes.
