The 2018 Opening Ceremony saw North and South Korea entering the stadium together under one flag, held by Chung Guam Hwang of North Korea and Yunjong Won of South Korea.

The Winter Games, staged only 80km (50 miles) from the North Korean border, saw the two Koreas, who are technically still at war since a 1953 armistice, march together at the opening ceremony for the first time since 2006.

Arriving on her brother Kim Jong Un's white private jet for a three-day visit, Kim Yo Jong and the country's 90-year-old nominal head of state Kim Yong Nam are scheduled to meet with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on February 10 in a luncheon at Seoul's presidential palace. But as the peninsula tries to de-escalate the threat of nuclear war, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence warned the slated to impose another round of sanctions against North Korea.

A spokeswoman for the Games said: "It was a Korean spectator and he was removed from the stadium as soon as he was taken off the stage".

Tensions between the two soared past year as Pyongyang tested missiles capable of reaching the US mainland and its most powerful nuclear device to date, while Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump traded personal insults and threats of war.

The two wannabe leaders posed for pictures together as a symbol of thawing relations between the two nations amid tension over nuclear weapons and North Korea's missile program. This is the first time for South Korea to host the Winter Games.

Asked about criticism that Pence stood and cheered only for Team USA and stayed seated when the North and South Koreans marched in under a unified flag, the official was unapologetic.

AP Q&A: What it Means That Stocks Are in a 'Correction'
Ten-year Treasury yields fluctuated near their four-year highs, while the yen found traction as a haven from the stock turmoil. Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 1.43-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq , a 1.36-to-1 ratio favoured advancers.

The significance of Pence and the North Koreans sitting in the same box seemed to run counter to the mission he was supposed to undertake.

Moon has been trying to use the games as an opportunity to revive meaningful communication with North Korea after a period of diplomatic stalemate and eventually pull it into talks over resolving the worldwide standoff over its nuclear program.

Team USA is the largest contingent with 244 athletes - 135 men and 109 women - eclipsing the 230 representing the United States in Sochi four years ago.

A white tiger, the Games' mascot Soohorang, long considered a protective guardian in Korean history and culture, guided the children to a cove where they were then transported to an ancient land.

Japanese Foreign Ministry spokesman Norio Maruyama said he had not seen the flag so he did not want to comment.

Almost all restaurants which serve dog meat in Pyeongchang - where the opening ceremony is being held today - have ignored a government order to stop serving the controversial food during the Games. The building has honored the Olympics before, including a similar display for the Rio Opening Ceremony in 2016.

On Friday, Games organizers POCOG said: "A letter was today sent from POCOG President Mr Lee Hee-beom to the Chef de Mission of the National Olympic Committee of the Islamic Republic of Iran to apologize for the misunderstanding regarding the distribution of mobile phones to the Iranian athletes".
