Dow surges to triple-digit gains as Trump speaks out on markets

Stock markets continue to fall amid interest rate hike fears

Here's what you need to know about what's going on with the stock market.

Monday's slump in United States stocks was a break from many months of relative steady gains and left market participants grappling with an implosion of products that bet against volatility. In this case, that was less than two weeks ago, when the Dow closed at a record high of 26,616. It's still up 15 percent over the past year.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index skidded 6.1 percent to 21,296.03 by early Tuesday afternoon.

The wild swings Tuesday marked the third day of volatility in global markets. Earlier, volatile equity markets led investors to seek out lower-risk bonds, but many investors remained nervous after a week-long bond rout sent yields on Monday to four-year highs. Brent crude gave up 70 cents, or 1.1 percent, to $US64.81 per barrel.

Two days of steep losses have erased the US market's gains from the start of this year, ending a spate of record-setting calm for stocks.

Earlier European shares closed up 2.0 percent, snapping a seven-day losing streak, while a world stock index was up slightly. The Dow surged 567 points higher on Tuesday, and at one point Wednesday it was poised for a two-day gain of nearly 1,000 points.

Asian markets followed Wall Street down after the Dow entered "correction" territory for the first time in two years. "Today, when good news is reported, the Stock Market goes down". "South Korean markets started higher in the morning but investors are more anxious that US markets will see further sell-offs tonight". Futures markets suggested another, but more moderate drop, in the US, with the Dow and S&P 500 futures down 0.8 percent and 0.2 percent.

Turkish president says helicopter downed in northern Syria
At least eight residents remained missing when the search was suspended at nightfall, one rescuer said. Since the start of the conflict, the Israeli Air Force has repeatedly attacked targets inside Syria.

"If you put $100 into the market at the January 26 peak, you'd still have $90", said Greg McBride, chief financial analyst for Bankrate.com.

It's unclear if the global markets are really moving in "lockstep", as some observers have suggested, but uncertainty abounds. His promises for big corporate tax cuts helped lift the Dow more than 8,000 points, though it has since given back about a quarter of that surge.

While Wall Street has been calling for a correction for some time, given the market's euphoric rise, the fall has been more violent and quicker than anticipated.

Oil prices also weighed on the index, with benchmark USA crude down 1.3 per cent to $63.35 per barrel. The Nasdaq Composite Index tumbled 274.82 points, or 3.90 perc ent, to 6,777.16.

The Canadian dollar was trading at 79.80 cents USA, down from Monday's average price of 80.11 cents.

In currency trading, the dollar fell to 109.02 yen from 109.54 yen late Tuesday. Falls like this have not been registered since August 2011 when investors were fretting over Europe's debt crisis and the debt ceiling impasse in Washington that prompted a USA credit rating downgrade.

For context the index was down 4.6% yesterday. The euro slipped to $1.2372 from $1.2377.
