United States drone strike kills 7 in Pakistani tribal area

The Trump administration imposed sanctions Wednesday on three individuals linked to Pakistanbased militant networks as it pushes Islamabad to crack down on perpetrators of attacks on Afghanistan.

The deputy chief of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Khan Saeed Mehsud alias Khalid Sajna, was killed in the Thursday night drone strike along with three others, the Express Tribune reported.

The US Treasury placed Rahman Zeb Faqir Muhammad, Hizb Ullah Astam Khan, and Dilawar Khan Nadir Khan on its blacklist of "Specially Designated Global Terrorists", in an effort to disrupt the group's ability to obtain and distribute financing. The Department called on the Pakistani government and others in the region "to work with us to deny sanctuary to these unsafe individuals and organizations". As of mid-2014, he was a long-standing contact of LeT members involved in Afghan operations, and he was involved in business activities with an LeT commander responsible for the group's operations in Afghanistan.

All three were tied to Shaykh Aminullah, who has been on worldwide terror blacklists since 2009.

The United States alleges that Aminullah turned a religious school in the northwest Pakistani city of Peshawar into a training and recruiting base used by Al-Qaeda, the Afghan Taliban, and Lashkar-e-Taiba. Dilawar Khan Nadir Khan, another leader at the madrassa, is said to have relayed Aminullah's messages, transferred funds and facilitated his travel in Pakistan and the Gulf. The department said Hizb Ullah Astam Khan, who served as a financial official at the madrassa, was previously a bomb expert.

"They (Pakistan) understand what we expect. Our suspension of security assistance continues until we see more evidence that they are in fact taking action", Sullivan said.

Drone strikes in the region have surged in the wake of US President Donald Trump's announcement of a new Afghan policy in which Pakistan was accused of harbouring terrorists and offering "safe havens to the agents of chaos". Dilawar has also facilitated funds transfers, including global transactions, on behalf of Shaykh Aminullah.
