Hawkish BoE hints at earlier rate rises

BoE Keeps Rates On Hold

But with the economy improving, the bank decided in November 2017 to raise the rate by 25 basis points to 0.5% - its first hike in a decade - to control inflation which was 3.1% (CPI) in November.

The MPC forecasted CPI, which is now at 3%, to remain above its target despite predicting a fall back over the coming months.

In reaction, the pound surged against the euro and dollar on the prospect of a potential rate hike as soon as May, according to analysts, and further rises thereafter. However, this is below expectations for global growth of almost 4% over the same period.

With the BoE rate decision out of the way the market will soon be turning its attention to Friday's run of United Kingdom ecostats, with United Kingdom industrial production, manufacturing production, construction output and the highly significant trade balance liable to take centre stage.

Ben Brettell, senior economist at Hargreaves Lansdown, said: "The BoE's rhetoric echoed that of September's meeting minutes, which preceded the November rate hike".

The BoE also ramped up its outlook for the British economy, despite persistent uncertainty surrounding Brexit.

"Arguably, the pound could have strengthened even further (on the BoE) if it were not for less favourable external conditions", said MUFG currency strategist Lee Hardman.

Sterling rose to a 16-month high of $1.4346 in January.

"The BoE signalled that interest rates could rise in May, and the hawkish commentary sent GBP/EUR above €1.440".

The MPC said Brexit remained the biggest risk and greatest source of uncertainty to the outlook of the United Kingdom economy.

Markets are now predicting central banks globally will tighten policy faster than previously expected with inflation expectations growing. That was up from the 1.6 percent given in November.

The Bank of England is sticking to its gradual interest rate plan, and before the Thursday meeting, the financial markets expected interest rates to reach 1.2% by the beginning of 2021.

The bank's rate-setting monetary policy committee (MPC) voted unanimously to keep interest rates on hold at 0.5 per cent- suggesting that the cost of borrowing will not remain this low for much longer.

The BoE forecast Britain's annual inflation rate to hit 2.4 percent this year before slowing to 2.2 percent next year.

But the outlook for Britain has been overshadowed by the talks for Britain's exit from the European Union next year, and uncertainty over their future relationship.
