First human eggs grown in laboratory

HUMAN eggs have been fully grown in a lab in a world first as Scots researchers look to fertilise them. These women may still have egg cells that could be developed in the laboratory.

Writing in the journal Molecular Human Reproduction, researchers from Edinburgh and NY describe how they took ovarian tissue from 10 women in their late twenties and thirties and, over four steps involving different cocktails of nutrients, encouraged the eggs to develop from their earliest form to maturity.

The major breakthrough could pave the way for a new era of fertility treatments.

Currently, cancer patients may have a piece of ovary removed and frozen before chemotherapy or radiotherapy. It is not clear how healthy the final eggs produced are as the speed of maturation in the lab was significantly faster than it would occur in the human body. Of the 48 eggs that reached the penultimate step of the process, nine reached full maturity.

Although various teams have achieved different stages of the process before, the new work is the first time researchers have taken the same human eggs all the way from their earliest stages to the point at which they would be released from the ovaries.

The scientists are now working on testing whether the eggs can be fertilized and produce healthy embryos.

The researchers used immature ovarian tissue taken from biopsies on ten women aged between 25 and 39 having Caesarean sections. Even if her mature eggs are preserved, reintroducing them poses a risk of reintroducing cancer too.

An egg needs to lose half its genetic material during development, otherwise there would be too much DNA when it was fertilised by a sperm.

Professor Daniel Brison, of the department of reproduction at the University of Manchester, said: "This is an exciting breakthrough which shows for the first time that complete development of human eggs in the laboratory is possible, more than 20 years after this was achieved in mice". While these women can have mature eggs collected before treatment, that approach also has problems.

Professor Telfer said it was unlikely that it would be of much benefit for women undergoing a menopause at the normal stage between 45-55 as they would no longer have egg cells that could be used.

Darren Griffin, professor of genetics at the University of Kent, said: 'It will be a while until this is implemented in the clinic but, if and when it is, this will be seen as one of the seminal advances'. It was funded by the Medical Research Council.
