Durham University student Olivia Burt crushed to death outside nightclub

Police investigators at the scene outside the Missoula nightclub in Durham

"The circumstances surrounding her death are unclear at this time", Durham Police said in a statement.

One eyewitness, who did not wish to be named, told the Northern Echo: People were barging to get in. There was a metal barrier that they put at the front to stop people coming in.

First aiders tried desperately to resuscitate Olivia, but she died at the scene.

"They stopped people at the front of the queue from coming in because it was so busy inside, but the people at the back didn't know and kept pushing and one of the barriers fell".

"I look round and there's this girl on the floor with blood pouring out of her head, I run over to try and help other people look after her and there is blood literally everywhere".

"There were too many people and he couldn't get them off her". The queue has gone around the fence and as they pushed to get in it caused the fence to fall over. There was a fair bit of panic. "The 19-year-old Durham University student died in the vicinity of Missoula night club in Durham following an incident at about 11.55pm last night".

The witness added that a bouncer took his shirt off to stem the bleeding from the victim's head before he delivered CPR with his colleagues.

"Another student heroically gave CPR to the girl until the ambulance arrived and I would say it was very admirable of all the students who were trying to save the girl".

Durham Police have confirmed a 20-year-old woman died after suffering "serious injuries" near the Missoula night club.

The North East Ambulance Service said it was called at about 23:50 to reports of someone having suffered a "serious head injury".

"Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time".

In a statement, Missoula said it was "a bad accident" and they were working with the police and security company which provides door staff.

Missoula's Wednesday-evening event, Game Over, describes itself as Durham's biggest student night and it is in the popular Walkergate area of bars and restaurants.

"You will appreciate that I am unable to share further details given the ongoing Police investigation".
